Teacher Certification and Additional Endorsements
Students who complete the Vocational Home Economics
program and who wish to obtain Texas teacher certification
must pass the Examinations for Certification of Educators
in Texas (ExCET) in pedagogy (professional education)
and in the appropriate teaching field as mandated by
Senate Bill 50. These tests meet specifications of the Texas
Education Agency. Passing scores have been established at
the state level. Additional information regarding these tests
is available through the Department of Education.
The following teaching endorsements may be added to
Vocational Home Economics certification by completing
the courses listed:
1. Early Childhood, 9 hrs.: EACH 466, and 471, 490.
2. Early Childhood Handicapped, 18 hrs.: EACH 466,
471; SPED 473, 477, 481; EDUC 490.
3. English as a Second Language, 15 hrs.: READ 464;
EDUC 493; ENGL 330, 432 and 458.
Minor in Home Economics and Family Studies
A minor in Home Economics and Family Studies may be
added to other degrees. It requires 18 hours as follows:
1. Required courses, 9 hrs.: HEFS 241, 251, 313.
2. Choice I, 3 hrs.: chosen from HEFS 221, 222.
3. Choice II, 3 hrs.: chosen from HEFS 331, 332.
4. Advanced selection, 3 hrs.: chosen from HEFS 323,
345, 433, 452, 453.
ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE DEGREE
Child Development curricula of the Associate of Science
degree are designed to enable the graduate to enter an
occupation with a marketable skill, an acceptable level of
competency, and the ability to communicate intelligently.
The program is designed to enable students to provide an
optimal learning and caring environment for children in
many settings. Specialized courses develop skills, and
General Education courses enable students to be effective
members of society.
A minimum of 71 semester hours is required for the
Associate of Science degree. The last 24 hours and at least
9 hours in the major field must be done in residence.
Before being admitted to this program, a student must
satisfy the requirements listed under "Initial Academic
Programs," p. 15.
General Education Requirements
General education requirements for the AS include the
following courses totaling 30 hours:
1. Bible courses, 6 hrs.: textual studies.
2. English courses, 6 hrs.: ENGL 111, 112.3. Science courses, 3 hrs.: BIOL 120 or CHEM 101.
4. Social and Behavioral Science courses, 6 hrs.: HIST
221 or 222 and POLS 226.
5. Communication course, 3 hrs.: COMS 111.
6. Math, 3 hrs.: MATH 120.
7. Physical Education courses, 2 hrs.: Activity courses.
8. University 100, 1 hr.
Departmental Requirements
Departmental requirements for the AS in Child Development
include the following courses totaling 41 hours:
1. Required courses, 23 hrs.: HEFS 225,* 250, 254,*
256,* 403, 451, 452, 453.
2. Psychology course, 3 hrs.: PSYC 120.
3. Sociology courses, 6 hrs.: SOCI 111, 362.
4. Education course, 3 hrs.: EACH 466.
5. Physical Education course, 3 hrs.: PE 241.
6. Electives, including deficiency requirements in science
and foreign language, 3 hrs.

General Home Economics and Family Studies
HEFS 100 Professions in Home Economics (1-0-1), fall. Career
opportunities, history and philosophy of Home Economics as a
profession. Required of most Home Economics and Family Studies
majors.
HEFS 400 Guided Study (3-0-3),* on demand.
HEFS 401 Home Economics Seminar (1-0-1), fall. Professional
aspects of employment, current trends and issues in home economics and
assessment of didactic instruction in home economics curriculum.
Prerequisite: Second semester junior standing.
HEFS 403 Field Experience (1-10-3), fall. Supervised work
experience in a business, agency, or organization appropriate to the
student's area of specialization. Minimum of 160 clock hours experience
in the field required, plus one hour seminar per week. Prerequisites:
Junior standing; adviser and department chairman approval; and
acceptance of the student by a business, agency, or organization.
HEFS 440 Topics (3-0-3)*.
Clothing, Textiles, and Fashion Merchandising
HEFS 211 Textiles (2-4-3), fall, even years. Study of fibers and fabrics,
their properties, identification, use, and care. Course fee: $25.
HEFS 212 Clothing Construction (2-4-3), fall, even years. Principles
and techniques of fitting, pattern alteration, and clothing construction.
Commercial patterns and use. Course fee: $25.
HEFS 313 Clothing Selection and Management (3-0-3), spring.
Impact of economics, social, and psychological forces on clothing needs of
individuals and families. Emphasizes selection, wardrobe planning, and
clothing management. Prerequisite: sophomore standing.
HEFS 314 Fashion Merchandising (3-0-3), spring, odd years.
Fundamentals of fashion innovation, marketing, and retailing applied to
apparel and accessories.
Food, Nutrition, and Dietetics
HEFS 221 Introductory Nutrition (3-0-3), fall, spring. Nutritional
needs of various age groups and the influence of socioeconomic, cultural,
and psychological factors on food and nutrition behavior presented in a
descriptive survey of nutrients required by the human body. Same as
HED 221.
