Industrial Technology 87
Industrial
Technology
The Department of Industrial Technology in the College of
Arts and Sciences offers the Associate of Science Degree
and the Bachelor of Science Degree. Current faculty
members are listed at the back of the catalog.
INTRODUCTION
Abilene Christian University is one of the fewer than 30
private institutions in the United States which provide
both associate and baccalaureate degrees in the field of
industrial technology. The student working on the AS
degree at ACU can major in General Drafting Technology,
Pre-Architecture or Construction Technology. The student
seeking the BS can major in Industrial Technology and
concentrate in areas of Industrial Production, Industrial
Management, Industrial Distribution, Industrial
Technology, or specific technologies.
The mission statement of the department is similar to that
of the university: to educate students for Christian service
and technological leadership throughout the world. Specific
purposes of the Industrial Technology department include
preparing broadly-trained leaders in industry and business;
preparing teachers of technology; and assisting students in
the interface of technology in their liberal arts education.
Placement possibilities for industrial technology majors are
excellent. Graduates may (1) teach Technology Education
in junior and senior high schools; (2) work in industry as
drafters, technicians, plant managers, supervisors, or
machine operators; (3) fill industrial or teaching jobs for
the government; or (4) go into business for themselves in
industrial-related fields. Both education and industry
increasingly need more college graduates than they can
now acquire.
Students who wish to teach industrial technology in the
public schools must take additional courses in the
Department of Education.
GENERAL DEPARTMENTAL
REQUIREMENTS
Some scheduling problems may arise because most
industrial technology courses are laboratory activities and
require double periods. Most advanced courses are
scheduled at the same time as elementary courses;
therefore, it is important that students take courses in the
sequence indicated.
Students in the Honors Program should consult the
department head about upper-division honors courses.
ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE DEGREE
A minimum of 64 semester hours is required for the
Associate of Science degree in General DraftingTechnology and General Construction Technology; a
minimum of 69 semester hours is required for the
Associate of Science degree in Pre-Architecture. The last
24 hours must be done in residence, and at least 9 hours of
the major field must be done in residence.
Admission Requirements
Before being admitted to this program, a student must
satisfy the requirements listed under "Initial Academic
