Art
The Department of Art in the College of Liberal and Fine
Arts offers the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree and the
Bachelor of Arts Degree. The student interested in teaching
art in the public schools should see the Department of
Education section of this catalog. Current art faculty
members are listed at the back of the catalog.
INTRODUCTION
The Department of Art concentrates on developing the
student's understanding of art and the artistic process
through studio experiences and the study of art history and
theory. Art fundamentals, stressed through design and
drawing, are the basis for advanced studio courses. Studies
in art history include both broad surveys and studies of
specific periods and movements.
Students are encouraged from the beginning of their studies
to do independent work in addition to classroom
assignments. Senior students are provided studio space as an
encouragement to do independent work and to prepare for
their senior exhibition.
The department's well-equipped and air-conditioned
studios and classrooms are located in the Alice Pratt Brown
Art Hall in the Don Morris Center. The Clover Virginia
Shore Art Gallery, a part of the complex, hosts regular
showings of original works of art.
GENERAL DEPARTMENTAL
REQUIREMENTS
Late Enrollment
Enrollment in studio classes will not be accepted after the
first week in the semester.
Grades and GPA
Art majors must maintain a C level or above in all studio
courses to be counted toward the major. The student who
receives a D must repeat the course. The art major must
earn a 2.25 GPA in all his art courses from ACU. The
minimum grade for art courses transferred to ACU is C.
Studio Time
For each studio course meeting 6 hours per week, the
student will be expected to devote a minimum of 3
additional hours of outside class time per week to class
assignments.
Transfer Students
The transfer student receives credit for art courses
completed at another college according to a routine
evaluation made by the Registrar. Due to the fact that
courses vary greatly among different schools, his exact place
in his ACU program can be determined only after he or sheperformance commensurate with his current classification.
Credit hours transferred toward a degree in art shall not
exceed one half of the credit hours within the major. A
minimum of 24 hours of the total advanced hours in studio
areas required for the BFA must be done at ACU.
Permanent Collection
The art faculty reserves the right to make selections from
current work each year to add to a permanent collection of
outstanding student work which is used in public
exhibitions. All work done as a part of class work by
regularly enrolled students is the property of the department
until released, and the department reserves the right to
exhibit or reproduce such work in publications of the
university.
BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS DEGREE
The BFA is a studio intense program usually elected by
students desiring to become artists, designers, or
artist/teachers. Concentrations are available in ceramics,
drawing, graphic design, jewelry/metals, painting, and
sculpture. Candidates for this degree are expected to show a
high level of motivation and competence. The degree
requires a minimum of 69 semester hours in art with a
minimum GPA of 2.25. Postgraduate or graduate study
should be a part of the future plans of the student pursuing
a career in art. Those desiring careers as artist teachers in

Master of Fine Arts Degree.
