General Studies, Geology 73
General Studies
The General Studies Program is designed to assist two
groups of students, those who have not decided on a major
and those new students whose ACT scores indicate they
need additional academic preparation for college-level
studies. Services provided include teaching, advising,
scheduling, and monitoring academic progress.
Once the undecided student has chosen a major or the
developmental student has completed the required General
Studies courses, he or she is assigned an adviser in the
department of his or her major field of study.
Students who are required to take General Studies courses
(as explained under "Initial Academic Programs," p. 14)
must enroll in the required courses during their first year at
ACU. They cannot withdraw from one of these courses
unless they test out or prove, by retaking the ACT, that
they do not need the course.
Courses offered for academic development are considered
additions to General Education requirements and may not
be substituted for any other required or elective courses.
Students may take a specific course only three times.
Current faculty members are listed at the back of the catalog.
Students may test out of a General Studies course by taking
a General Studies Exit Exam or by re-taking the appropriate
part of the ACT. Both the Exit Exam and the ACT may be
re-taken following a 60-day waiting period. Both exams may
be taken twice for exemption from a course.COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
The numbers following course titles indicate (1) hours of
lecture per week, (2) hours of laboratory per week, and (3)

Geology is concerned with the processes operating in and
on the earth; consequently geology research overlaps with
such fields as chemistry, physics, and biology. The geology
student can choose from many specialties, each requiring
familiarity with all facets of earth study. Economic
applications are increasing as more non-renewable natural
resources are located and exploited. While the university
does not offer a degree program in Geology, some courses
are offered. Basic Physical Geology, NAS 105, may be used
to satisfy a portion of the General Education Requirements.
Introduction to Geology, GEOL 111, includes laboratory
work and is intended to assist Education majors in fulfilling
state certification standards.
Geology Degree in Abilene Tri-College Consortium
While Abilene Christian University does not offer a degree
program in geology, a cooperative agreement exists with
Hardin-Simmons University whereby a student may obtain
a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in geology. The
student will take 42 hours of geology at Hardin Simmons in
courses approved by his/her adviser. All general educationrequirements and other required science courses will be
taken at Abilene Christian University. The degree earned is
conferred by Abilene Christian University.
Consult with the dean of the College of Natural and
Applied Sciences or a department chair in the college.
