The Department of English in the College of Liberal and
Fine Arts offers the Bachelor of Arts Degree. Current
faculty members are listed at the end of this section.
INTRODUCTION
Why does every liberal arts degree program require at
least four courses in English? English provides the tools
for acquiring and effectively expressing knowledge of all
the subjects students study. English courses teach students,
through reading, writing, and discussion, to make
sound judgments. This training is valuable not only in
evaluating and appreciating literary works, but also in understanding
past and present human activity. It is valuable
throughout life.
The Bachelor of Arts Degree in English is designed for
the student who seeks a liberal education as preparation
for graduate school or for various careers (such as
freelance writing, editing, technical writing, personnel
work, management, and law) which stress broad reading,
self-expression, an understanding of human nature, and
the ability to analyze and organize information.
Many ACU English graduates teach in high schools both
in the United States and abroad. Others add graduate
training and go into college teaching. Since English
degrees usually have many elective hours, you have a
chance to take enriching courses for a fuller liberal arts
education. Consequently, many schools and employers encourage
English majors. For example, law schools, medical
schools, and schools of social work, as well as public
relations firms and publishers, frequently select English
majors. Businesses and government agencies are willing to
train English majors with broad backgrounds for many
responsible positions. The English major who can use
computers is especially useful in the marketplace.
Two Bachelor of Arts degrees in English are offered. The
first, described below, is for those who desire a liberal arts
degree preparing them for a career in writing or business,
or preparing them for graduate school (in English, law,
medicine, or business, for instance). The other degree is
for students who wish to teach in secondary school with
English as a single teaching field. Students interested in
that degree or in teaching in secondary school with
English as one of two teaching fields should see the
Department of Education section of the catalog.
