THOSE WERE THE DAYS
M THE DOCTOR WAS j
ear Editor
We have been reading n lot lately
nbout a researcher for the Tarm
Bureau In Washington who stuck
out his slide rule and came up
with the startling discovery that
ifter all the farmer isnt the polecat
In the woodpile when It comes
to the high cost of food But rather
the high cost of transportation
packaging processing selling etc
is Ihe real villain In these things
Well well n great discovery but
after all any two bit farmer on the
intellectual level of n second grade
moron could have told him this fact
several years ago and saved him
i all this travail in arriving at his
i conclusion
So after all it Isnt the farmer
i but rather the pipeline from him to
the consumer who is to blame all of
I which brings to mind a story I read
way back there in the dark ages
1 about the colored preacher who was
I holding forth and at the conclu
sion of the service stifled to take
up a collection when one of the brethren
arose and said See hcah
brudder Johnson religion is free
so whut fah is yo taken up dls collection
The good parson gave
him a withering look and responded
Yas suh Brudder Johnson the re
I ligion is free but it takes money
I to pipe it to you slnnahsl
Well in the absence of prayer
perhaps a little verse might not be
out of order so here goes
Hill parity as promised In nineteen
fifty two
By Mr Elsenhower in his famous
rendezvous
With the farmers in their golden
fields of corn and oats
Was just another gimmick in a
final bid for votes
A lot of things have changed since
the time that Ike first ran
Instead of parity we got Brother
Benson and his plan
Aided and abetted by Mr Shu
man and his frills
To decapitate the farmer as a
cure for all our ills
I know this dnvl I have written
sounds like a mess and it is a
mess but in my humble opinion it
makes about as much sense as J
lot of things that have recently come
out of Washington or Austin or even
Greater Amanllo or Life Magazine
so be patient with me
Yours very trul >

The base allotment which mav
be tspanded later under tht Iao
choice cotton program was unnoum
i d Tuesday for the 23countv arei
bv Agricultural Stabilization and
Const nation office officials
It will be the smallest base allotment
since at least 1951 and possibly
earlier ASC officials said
Swishers 19G0 acreage will be
50 061 acres compared with 52137
in 19W Deaf Smith will receive
10331 in 1W 0 compared with 10
2S2 this year All other counties
were cut
The base national allotment is unchanged
1G million acres plus 310
000 acres to maintain allotments of
10 acres or less
Area cotton growers will join producers
across the nation in a referendum
Dec 15 to decide whether
marketing quotas and also two program
choices will apply to the
1960 crop A twothirds majority of
the votes cast is necessary for mar
ketlng quotas to carry
If marketing quotas carry grow
crs will have a choice between two
programs known as plans A and
B Also a farmer who exceeds
his chosen acreage allotment will
bo subject to a quota penalty on his
he parity pricc as of next June 15
Under choice A a farmer may
elect to grow his crop in compliance
with his regular cotton allotment
Ho then would be eligible for a I
price support that is expected to
be not less than 75 per cent of parity
Tlie A support this year was
80 per cent of parity
Choice B provides a 10 per cent
acreage increase over the regular
farm allotment Growers who comply
with their II allotments would
be eligible for expected minimum
price supports of 60 per cent of
parity The B support this year
was 05 per cent of parity
If twothirds of the referendum
votes are no marketing quotas
or penalties will not be In effect for
the 1960 crop and only the regular
choice A allotments will be
available Allotments will be In effect
regardless of tho outcome of
the referendum
