W. E. DAMERON, 1901
Mr. and Mrs. Dameron, shortly after their Mayor W. Elmer Dameron.
marriage in 1920.
William Elmer Dameron, d native Texan, came to the Plains in 1900 with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. W. B. Dameron. After spending a year on the ranch in Castro County, they moved to
Hereford.
On May 5, 1920, Elmer Dameron married Jane Gregg, who was also a member of a pioneer
Deaf Smith County family.
Mr. Dameron was an active rancher, cattleman, and jurist all his life. In addition, he constantly
served his community in every way to make Hereford a town "our children will be proud
to live in".
During his three terms as mayor, the home rule charter was adopted for the city; city services
were extended to outlying areas; a paving program was carried out; Hereford parks
were improved.
In addition to these activities, Mr. Dameron served three terms as president of the Chamber
of Commerce; was county attorney and later county judge; served the First Christian Church
as elder for 35 years; taught a Sunday School class for more than 30 years; and at the time
of his death in November of 1952, he was serving as vice-president of the men's department
of the State Convention of Disciples of Christ.
Mayor Dameron also served the Boy Scout and Camp Fire programs locally. For his aggressive
leadership, he was named Hereford's "Man of the Year" in 1949. After his death, Lake
Park was renamed Dameron Park in his honor.
His wife, Jane, still lives in their home on Park Avenue. She is still active in work at the
church, in the Music Study Club, of which she is a charter member, and in other cultural
and civic activities in the community.
