HOMER K. FOX, 1914
Mrs. Tessie A. Fox i Homer K. Fox
Homer K. Fox came to the Panhandle on the first day of January 1913. He joined two of his brothers, J. A. and
E. D. (Doug) Fox here.
In 1900, J. A. Fox had opened the Galbreath & Fox Trading Company here and later had also purchased a general
mercantile business in Friona. Homer came to this area to operate the Friona store.
In June 1914, J. A. Fox consolidated the Hereford and Friona stores with another dry goods store which he owned
in Erick, Oklahoma, into one large store in Hereford called Fox Mercantile Company. This store was one of the
largest of its kind in Texas and active management of the store from 1916 to 1929 was under the direction of his
brothers, Homer and Doug, who later purchased the firm and operated it until 1935.
After the close of Fox Mercantile, Doug operated The Vogue dress shop until his retirement in 1946.
Homer Fox operated a dry cleaning shop for a time and in 1935 opened Fox Men's Shop. His store was a gathering
place for all men - from six to sixty - for a number of years. Everyone stopped in for a chat with Homer, even if
they didn't need to buy anything and they were always welcome.
Perhaps no one liked to recall events happening during his early years in Hereford better than did Homer Fox,
although he arrived on the scene in 1913 and must be considered a "young pioneer". For a number of years he
wrote a column with a "do you remember" heading for the Hereford Brand.
Perhaps because he had no children of his own, Fox befriended children of all ages. His boys' baseball team won
all available honors during the late 1920's and early 1930's. During World War II, he received letters from boys
from all over the world. For years he acted as "Santa" to an orphaned boy and girl, answering with gifts their
letters to the local paper.
Homer K. Fox married Miss Tess Clennin in Friona on June 14, 1914. Mrs. Fox was a charter member of the Music
Study Club, serving that organization for many years as a soloist and as a member of some duet and quartet groups.
Mrs. Fox also was the Director of the choir at the First Presbyterian Church from 1916 until 1941. She participated
in many other cultural and civic activities in the community.
Mr. Fox died in January of 1951 and Mrs. Fox still lives in the family home on Lee Avenue.
