pupils, four of whom are now learning the art of printing, il'structed
by Mr. W. D. Moore, Steps are about to be taken
to provide a better building fortheir reception, something
very much needed. Much credit is due to the worthy Superintendent,
of this institiol, Henry E. McCulloch, as well as
to Dr. Frank Riiney, Supclrintendent of th. Blind Institute,
for their ei-orts in behalf of those placed under their
charge. One of the institutions of which Austin may feel
proud is the Texas Military Institute one mile west of the
Capitol. The grounds are about thirty two acres in extent
lupon which is situated the Main Building, Mess Hall, Hospital,
Professor's residence Lecture Rooms etc. The Officers
of the Institute consist of the Superintendent Col.
John G. James, Commandant of Cadets, Military and Academic
Staff. The course of instruction includes all the branches
taught in the best institutions of our country, the object
being to fit the young man for professional studies or
the practical pursuits of life. A strict military discipline
is observed, to ensure the better government of the cadets
and give them regular healthy exercise. All drills and military
exercises are arranged so as not to in any way conflict
with the studies. Although not sectarian in its influences
the regulations require that the cadets shall attend
divine worship on sunday, thus giving a moral as
well as mental and physical training. The Austin graded
school, one of the finest buildings in Texas, occupies a delightful
position on the west of the Capitol Building. Some
three hundred pupils are in attendance and are offered
every opportunity of obtaining a thorough education for
the business and social walks of life.
The German-American Ladies' College offers to young
ladies the advantages of a full course in literature, modern
and ancient history, languages, drawing, elocution etc.,
and is unquestionably one of the finest schools in the State.
Beside these the Texas Female Institute, W. W. Fontaine,
President, St. Mary's school for youg ladies, under the
direction of the sisters of the Holy Cross, Prof. Bickler's
