MY
Innovative second
learning classes
By ASHLEY CAMBANIS
Staff Writer
Have you always wanted to
speak Spanish? Maybe even tried but
it seemed too complicated, or you
just did not have the time. Well new
research surfaced and My Spanish
Now classes, Spanish speaking
instruction led in part by a former
Tarleton student, are harnessing
this information and providing an
innovative learning experience.
My Spanish Now classes
are fun, intriguing, stress free, and
effective, and it is guaranteed that
you will understand every word that
is spoken in the class 100 percent of
the time.
The classes are not
structured like a traditional classroom
with monotonous note taking and
hours of studying. My Spanish Now is
not based on grammar and repetitive
verb conjugations, but on practica,
and interactive methods. The main
focus is on storytelling and providing
repetitions that enhance long-term
memory. Each story told in class
is uniquely made from individual
input that personalizes the learning
experience. Stories are funny,
interesting, exciting, crazy and easy
to follow, in class, volunteers go to
the front of the class and give a good
visual of what is happening in the
story.
Also, there is absolutely no
pressure to speak Spanish unless
desired. My Spanish Now uses
questioning and discussion methods
to provided meaningful repetition
and comprehensible input while
keeping it fun and interesting.
In addition, total physical
response, orTPR, is introduced
verbally and physically; applied by
doing actions such as touching the
table or walking around the room.
TPR was discovered in the 1960's
by Dr. Adam J. Asher, a professor in
psychology, a former dean at San Jose
State University, and the author of
earning Another Language Through
Actions. He has demonstrated his
work to several educational institutes
ranging from elementary schools to
universities.
The instructors for My
Spanish Now are Shelly Burch and
Dan Allard. Shelly is an experienced
Spanish teacher from Stephenville,
TX and holds a Bachelors of Arts in
Spanish and minors in history and
music from Tarleton State University,
and had instructed at all levels
of secondary education. Dan has
over five years experience teaching
Spanish to middle and high school
students, and has received training in
TPRS, TPR, and comprehensible input
methods.

Comments from class participants:
Diane Harris
"I have taught levels from beginning
to Advanced Placement in both Latin
and English for the past 33 years. I
love teaching languages, and this
experience will have a profound effect
on how I teach my ESOL classes next
year. Conceptually the strands of the
course spiral to create new learning
as former learning is simultaneously
reinforced. The sixteen hours were
pure fun! Thank you!!"
Scott Ramsay
"I had very high expectations for
the My Spanish Now experience
which I attended June 28- July 1.
Those expectations were met and
surpassed. I believe I used the word
"brilliant" more than once with my
classmates in discussing the approach
and lesson plans that have been
prepared for the beginning speaker
of Spanish ... I highly recommend it
and will direct my acquaintances and
associates who want to actually use
Spanish in their lives to My Spanish
Now!"
