ESTIMATES .wanted for building a Wharftbridge'frorathe
city of Chambersia tothe month ol the Trinity , river.
Gen. Chambers, th'e proprietor having partly formed a com-pany-to
effect the object,' and haying determined to take on his
own account the stock remainingott hands alter the first of No-
vember next, unless others may desire to have.it, estimates and
proportions forbuilding will be received by the undersigned un-
til the first day of November next. s.
The site is across a channel six hundred and thirty yards in
wid.th being at a narrow neck on Galveston or more properly
Tr inity bay, where the water ebbs and flows from one to three
feet; the bottom is of sand and stiff clay, and the centre channel
for about fifty yards is from eight to twelve feet in depth at high
water, gradually decreasing to the extt emetics at each side.
Apian nf the work, and specirlcatins of the quality and quan-
tity of timber necessary, may be seen at he office ol the under-
signed in this city.
Persons desirous of contracting, can examine for themselves,
as there is almost a daily conveyance from Galveston to Cham-
bersia, ( formerly Anahuac.) Timber is abundant in the im-
mediate vicinity, and also on the river above; and liberal en-
couragement will be given to a contractor who will undertake
and execute the work.
G. S. THOMAS, Agent.
City of Chambersia, July 15, 1P40. 250-w-tf
IJllOPEKTV KOK Z1A.LEUiij of Chanibzrsia1 his point so
. advantageously situated for a commercial City, at the mouth
of the Trinity River, has long been looked to with much interest,
and from the very favorable impressions manifested by all who
have viewed the situation, it is firmly behaved that the period has
now arrrived when it has only to be put in market to secure its rap-
id and prosperous giowth. Although this City was projected some-
time since, the proprietor, Gen. T. J Chambc.-s, was unwilling to
offer it at public sale until the actual demand ffr Lots should force
it into market : and.being ab?oibed in oilier irdispensable business
he has heretofore neglected to open it to tW public, but ihe late
rapid increase ol'populatlon unon the Trinitviliver, (having doi.Lled
itself in several connties wishin 4 monthsVllie daily demands that
are now made for lots in the city, and thooliciiaiions of a number
of persons of capital and enterprise, to whim haiias sold an intucst,
and of many otii.rs, who wish to jwrcbtsa for the purpose of sel-
tlin:' theins.-lyes in the ciiy, have iailurofl him to authorise it to be of
fered to the public, in a manner calculapd'io give all an upnonunity
of securing la themselves a part of thif fine property.
For this purpose, certificates will lie iwued to purch 11 lersof propel tv,
each one entitling the owner to two Iqts, wiih thepriv I, ge of taking
choice of any lots in the city, unapprcpnated at ihe time of st-Iecliiis
and taking possession of them for sei dement or improvement jand"
if no choice should be made, two vearsai'tcr thedatn of lheJrrz
tificate the lots corresponding 10 thurn will be determined by lot fervH
or drawing numbers, liom the wnol ! of the number?, of the unap-
propriatedlots. To secure the owners of certificates ihoproprielorof
the land has entered into a title bond to make to thuni Warranty
Deeds for their lots, wh.ch has beep.mgularly recorded in this county.
The present price of certificates is one hundred dollarncach, but as
almost the whole of the first issue I113 already been taken, the price
of the nest wili be raised.
The tswn is situated on an elevated bluff; thirty feet h:gh alongits
whole front, at the head of G lvlcston or Trinity Bay, commanding
a beautiful and picturesque view of tho country back of ihe City, and
in front of the bay and Trinity river which discharges its wa ersiulo
the bay opposite to the city a t a distance of tix hundred and thirty
yards. Kxtending off towards the east the praines skirte d with for-
ests of timber diversified witb. groves and a profusion of evergreens,
and watered by several fine streams. The Bay opening towards the
north to a circle of about fiv.S miles in diameter, contracts itself west-
ward into a narrow neck in front of the city where the Trinity pours
in its str.ams( and then spreads off to the west and down to the
south into an expanse beyond the reach of vision, giving a sweep to
the eye along its grove dad shores, of more than twenty miles.
It has been proven by actual experiments that theelevated ground
upon which thecitv stands, cxtendins-for manv miles in iianinitir
is exceedingly fertile in the production of sugar cane, cotton and
grain, and is admirably adapted to vegetable gardens. Several
leagues of ihisland about the city will be put into market; in quantities
to suit purchasers for farms, gardens and coun try seats ; and excellent
well water may be obtained any where upon it "at a depth of fiom fif-
teen to thirty feet.
The high, dry and airy position of the city, favored throughout the
summer hy sea breezes tcinperad by distance, gives to the atmos
phere a delicious softne33 rarely filt elsewhere, and secures the ines-
timable blessing of health; indeed, thepresent inhabitants (some of
whom have resideed in the. town for ten years,) might seem extrav-
agant in their account of it3saIubnousncssj but the situation only
has to be viewed byi the most sceptical to convince them that
Chambersia must soon become a desirable summer retreat for lam-
iiies living in regions exposed to attacks of the yolbw fever.
The port of Anahuac, (now the city of Charnbsrsla,) has been
highly spoken of as a place destined to become a great commercial
city by most of the writers upon the history and geography of-Tex-(

MATAGORDA ACADEMY.
The Rev. C: S. IVES and Lady would respectfully inform the
citizens of this place and its vicinity that they arc now prepared to
receive pupils ol both sexesinto their institution, and to instruct them
in all ihe branches of a substantial and finished education.
From ihe delightful location and health of Matagorda; from the
comforts and convenience of a well-built town; from a strong desire
of the people to establish and maintain a high tone of moral feeling
in ihe community; from the laudable observance of the Loid's day,
and regular attendance of the citizens on Divine Service, which is
now held uninterruptedly on every Sunday ; and. from there being a
regular Sunday School in town, this cannot but bo a very desirable
place for an institution for the education of the young.
Mr. Ives isa graduate of one of thefirst colleges in the United
States; and Mrs. Ives was educated in the best. schools for young
ladies in New England; besides which they have both for malty
years past been engaged either as Principals or Assistan ts In the first
literary institutions in the United States. For their qualifications,
success and reputation in teaching, they leave thefollowing testimo-
nials to speak. r d .
