that I would find what I sought. I am not overly religious
but it kept running through my head-that Bible
phrase--"And a little child shall lead them."
It wasn't a pleasant thought. But as I stood watching
him springing up and down in play, I thought of
the countless other children, hungry, destitute and
orphaned, that this little fellow might have his pretty
ball and smooth green lawn to play upon.
"Well," I said, "that's a fine ball you have there."
"Yes," he replied.
I saw that he was friendly and it would not be hard
to draw him into conversation. After tossing the ball
to him again, I said:
"You ought to have a nice little puppy to play with.
They are great play-fellows for little boys."
Wreathed in smiles, he said proudly: "I am going
to have a puppy. I'm going to have one soon!"
"You ought to get him for a Christmas present,"
I urged.
He stopped his play a moment and burst out that
he was going to have the puppy before Christmas, even.
"I'm goin' to have my doggy soon as my papa comes
home. And he's coming in a few days, too."
I felt warm all over. Everything quickened inside
of me. I thought a minute. Events had happened so
thick and fast I had lost all track of time andl dates.
Yes, that was true; only a few days until Christmas.
Furey was expected home soon. And little Furey,
Junior, would have his dog.
Then I would have his father! That is, if all went
well.
"That will be fine to have the little (log!" I said,
coming out of my dream. "I hope you will be able to
get a nice little Airedale. They are good friends for
boys."
Oh! I'll get a good one all right," he exclaimed confidently.
"My papa will give me the money to buy him."
He stood legs apart, hands stuffed into his little
