He said he would arrange a meeting and did so the
day before he and Shay returned home.
We met in a little Italian restaurant where the
spaghetti swung in succulent rhythm with the animated
eaters. Hot French bread with paprika, crisp green
lettuce with a red wine-vinegar dressing went down easily
with the other "red." I had a good time. Everybody
knew everybody else. If they didn't when they came in,
they did by the time they left. I found a few old
acquaintances myself.
At least they said: "Why 'scourse ole scout 'member
you fum years'h an' years'h ago."
Perhaps they did. I didn't deny it. I was even
glad for it. However I was studying the two women,
Mrs. Jesse Carson and her daughter Lucille. Mrs. Carson
was an attractive woman with soothing voice and magnificent
hair. It was like burnished silver. Lucille was
small and slender, apparently about eighteen. She had
a certain dainty manner and appealing blue eyes. Eyes
that could draw out secrets.
That night I said nothing to them of my proposition.
We met again the next day. In the meantime
Brown had told them something of my story and in a
general way why we were in San Francisco.
I decided to broach the subject to the young lady.
I asked her if she would like to play detective. Her
round, blue eyes grew rounder.
"I think it would be lots of fun!" she exclaimed.
I explained to her and Mrs. Carson my ineffectual
efforts to find out who was living in No. 506 Stanford
Court.
Both women caught on readily and soon we were
busy discussing what sort of disguise would be the best
for Lucille to wear. I had already made up my mind if
she would attempt the job, what I would have her do.
I asked her mother if she had any of the clothes
Lucille used to wear three or four years before. She
had.
