1 NOR FLEET
and adjusted his disheveled clothes until he presented a
fairly neat appearance. In spite of cold baths on our
faces, our eyes were red and swollen. We both looked
like a couple of "morning glories," after a hard night.
Mr. Padgett had our tickets for us and had recovered
the luggage. In the car was a young man whom we
could absolutely trust, said our friend.
W\re all drove to the station together. Mr. Padgett
had arranged to have Mr. Quattlebaum go with us as
far as New Orleans, so Pete and I could get a little sleep
on the train. I was afraid if we did not we would be
unable to cope with any situation which might arise.
Mr. Quattlebaum guarded Furey through the night,
never once slackening his hold on the chain.
Furey slept some and Pete and I (lozed. In the
morning we were refreshed and ready for the fray!
During the day trip Furey seemed to realize that
this time we had him for better or worse. He appeared
resigned to whatever fate awaited him and became more
manageable and talkative.
After luncheon I decided to take advantage of his
communicative mood and asked a few questions which
might tend to clear some tag ends of previous episodes.
I took out my leather billfold and from among the
contents extracted a torn, rumpled scrap of paper. I
handed it to Furey, who was sitting on the drawing room
seat opposite me. He took it in one of his bound hands
and read it.
"Furev," I remarked with a dry smile, "they nearly
got me that time."
He looked sheepish and handed the paper back to me
"How did you manage to get that note to Steel, and
how did you know Johnson had taken me to the club
house on the hill?"
He waited a minute before replying, then turned to
Pete and said:
"Pete, your daddy bears a charmed life. If he did
not, he never could have escaped from that place or from
