for debris from the

They had been told that there
were wells beneath the kitchen
floor, but myth became real-
ity recently when EcoTex Con-
struction uncovered them during
a repair and remodel project at
the home of Randy and Donna
Johnson at 422 West Plum Street
in Archer City.
The Johnsons believe the
wells date back to at least the
1920s when Charles Martin, Sr.,
founder of the Archer County
News, made his home there. The
original house was built next to
the wells to the east. The second
part of the house that covered
the two wells was built in the
the well that is under the door-
way, they hope to utilize the first
well for watering the lawn and
garden.
First they will drain it and
clean out the debris that has
been dropped during the remod-
eling efforts. (The Johnson’s say
the water was clean and clear
when they first uncoverd it.)
They expect it to fill back up to
its current depth from the un-
derground water source, so they
plan to repair the brick exterior
and make it a sealed display in
the kitchen. A hose will extend
from the well to the exterior of
the house.
They have used their garden to
feed families in the community
in the past and are hopeful that
this water source—along with a
potential third well in the back
yard—will allow them to contin-
ue gardening and taking care of
their lawn in the future.
“Now ifs official, ” Terry Wolf jokes as he shakes hands with Cody
Patton, the new Holliday football coach.
By Jenny Schroeder
My heart skipped a beat.
Did I read that right? “Holliday
football coach Terry Wolf has
resigned,” read a headline at the
Times Record News website.
I clicked to learn more. I just
couldn’t imagine Archer County
without him. To my relief I dis-
covered that while he is passing
the head football torch to defen-
sive coordinator Cody Patton,
he will remain the athletic direc-
tor and resume his former role
as head baseball coach. I headed
to Holliday to get the scoop.
Terry Wolf of Azle, Texas,
has been a part of coaching
young men and women in Ar-
cher County since 1981 when he
took the head baseball coaching
job at Archer City High School
right out of college at the age of
21. He figured he would move
back to the Metroplex after a
brief stint in small-town Amer-
ica, but what he found was a
home. “I fell in love with the
area,” said Wolf. “The people
are good people; the kids are
good. It’s easy to make friends
here. I’ve liked it. This is home
now.” He started a success-
ful baseball program from the
ground up and stayed at Archer
City 10 years before making the
move to Holliday, where he has
been ever since.
Coach Wolf has been a head
coach every single year since
he took that “temporary” job
in Archer County 31 years ago,
either baseball, football or both,
and he has served as the athletic
director for both Archer City
and Holliday. He has also been
a basketball coach (boys and
girls) and a track coach and even
helped out with cross country.
His coaching style? I think
“intense” would be an under-
statement. That’s how he de-
scribes himself, and I agree
based on my experience as a
7th grader under his leader-
ship on the basketball court. He
jokes about those days, saying
he thinks he may have made at
least one of us girls cry every
day. But that year with Wolf

The first well—pictured
above—measures ap-
proximately 15 feet
deep, with fresh,
spring-fed water about
five and a half feet deep. The di-
ameter at the bottom is 10 to 12
feet. Old screens are visable.
The second well does not have
brick above the ground and is
more difficult to access because
a doorway had been built over
part of it. The water is just as
clear in this deeper but more
narrow well.
The Johnsons are not living in
the home at present. Extensive
work is required due to damage
caused by a collapsed ceiling
and extensive water damage that
resulted from a broken water
pipe during the two major snow
storms of February 2011.

The Archer County News
conducted a telephone interview
with Robert J. Siddall, Director,
Inventory and Disposition, of
the Texas General Fand Office
last Friday morning in regard to
letters sent to the current prop-
erty owners on a 40.6 acre tract
in the vicinity of FM 1954, 3
Way Road and Sisk Road.
Mr. Sidall indicated State
of Texas records show the tract
was never officially patented.
The State of Texas granted pat-
ents or ownership rights based
on surveys dating back to the
late 1800s. Failure to have a pat-
ent signed by the Governor of
the State would mean title actu-
ally resides with the Permanent
School Fund.
According to title examiners
at local title insurance compa-
nies, the case is a very unique
and intriguing. The field notes

Kolin and Koby Styles of
Holliday, Texas had no idea the
attention they would receive af-
ter each won his division at the
Cowtown Races last Sunday in
Fort Worth, Texas. Kolin won
first in the Cowtown Marathon
with a time of 2:37, earning a
free trip to the New York Mara-
thon. His brother Koby won first
place in the ultra marathon 5 OK
race with a time of 3:18. Since
then they have been flooded by
the media.
Kolin, who trained for the run,
learned he had won after the
first runner to cross the finish
line was disqualified for running
under another person’s number
and failing to register for the
race. But Kolin told ESPN.com
that he didn’t mind winning by
the technicality.
“I’ll take it. Any possible way
to win something,” he told re-
porter David Stein.
Older brother Koby, on the
other hand, registered for the
race right before the deadline
because Kolin told him he was

Tuesday night the annual Ar-
cher City Volunteer Fire Depart-
ment appreciation dinner was
held at the Iron Trail Steakhouse
in Archer City. Mayor Fevy
addressed the firemen, thank-
ing them for all they do for our
town. He addressed the fact that
the department had to overcome
adversity this past year, but they
did it with character.
“I see the donations that come
in through the city for the VFD,”
Fevy said, “and it shows that the
community respects the depart-
ment and is behind you.”
Fire Chief William Pettit ad-
dressed the firemen and guests
with a brief summary of statis-
tical information regarding the
number of responses made by
the department in 2012. There
were 70 grass fires, 20 motor
vehicle accidents, 1 hazardous
material, 11 structure fires, 9
first responder calls and 8 mis-
cellaneous.
On behalf of the VFD, Pettit
awarded the Fireman of the Year
award to Justin Baker.
