As It te scarce* possible for an em-1
roider to hare too large a repertory
'To rather front a hundred thousand bayonets
than four (hostile newspapers,” These words of the
“Little Corporal” whose tread shook Europe are res-
pectfully ,shunted at a certain district judge not far
away. j
The Sc iley entourage of Texas includes Dallas,
Austin, Waco, San Antonio and Galveston. The cir-
cumstance of Admiral and Mrs. Schley forgetting to
stop in Houston and Orange will not be appreciated
in Texas, but it can be blamed only to those in charge
of the itinerary.
Was Jim Buchanan legally executed? That is the
question now being raised by a few of Buchanan’s
friends. Sooth to say, there are a few of these yet
out of hell. Yes, we are sorry to say that the fester-
ing libel on the human form was legally hung. “ ’Tis
true ’tis pity and pity ’tis ’tis true.”
Orange is still barkbound, and the building of
houses lags far behind the demand. A prominent
contractor informs us that, while a great many indi-
vidual residences are being constructed, there are now
no large contracts in hand and no houses being erect-
ed for rent. It goes without saying that such an in-
vestment would pay large returns.
It may be because we look at everything Or-
ange with rose-colored glasses, but it does seem to us
that we have a fewer dumber of small bad boys, or
bad small boys, in this town, than the ordinary town
of this size is afflicted with. Don’t tell us they are
all grown up. The big boys, like we us and company,
are good, too.
There is no reason why all the “eminent special-
ists" should come from Vienna or Berlin, and thank
the Lord they don’t. There are physicians and sur-
geons in Orange who can gj^Ve these people lessons.
One dispatch says that the Viennese specialist pre-
dicted that his operation would be a success. O, how
easy!
A story is being told which really seems to be
all of a story about forty pretty girls from Roanoke
college who had an appointment to meet and shake
hands with the president the other morning. They
waited in the East room, and chairs being scarce,
they sat upon the floor Turkish fashion. Finally
the president burst into the room and laughed gayly
at their confusion. Now college girls are proverb-
ially plain, and the idea of getting forty pretty ones
in a bunch is too much for even our credulity. We
cannot conceive how it is possible to assemble forty
pretty girls in a bunch anywhere but in Orange. ^
Today, by courtesy of one of our oldest citizerj*; we
begin the publication of a diary of three scoje years
apd ten ago—of the days which truly “tried men’s
souls.” The diary is reproduced vertaifm, and if an
English scholar may quarrel with its/hetoric, let him
reflect that no diary can stand thfc test of a critical
analysis. Moreover, let him iyf to write for the cult
of seventy years hence. Iiy^mr opinion, which is by
no means humble, the dj£ry before us is as nearly
perfect as may be,.andnve arc taken, as it were, by
the very naturaln^ of the earnest writer. .This is

may come as novelties to some work-

Trifling faults of the skin may be
concealed when it is desired to wear
evening dreee by a judicious use of
cold cream and powder. The neck and
arms should be covered first with the
cream, which then should be removed
with a soft linen cloth. Powder then
must be applied liberally and carefully
brushed off. If there are hollows in the
neck, the powder must be used in them
with some additional lartshness.
