HemisFair--1978
HemisFair was a downtown dream. Looking back now, fifteen
years after I broached the idea to Secretary of Commerce Hodges --
who surprised me by an enthusiastic response -- looking back
fourteen years after serious organization got underway; and
looking back just short of ten years from the day the gates
opened for business -- I can say that the realization of that
dream exceeded my greatest hopes or expectations.
In the beginning, I did not dare dream of a world class
exposition. I had in mind a trade fair, similar in some respects
to the commercial expositions that are now a familiar part of the
world commercial scene.
I did not dare dream of a new downtown convention complex --
that now, in only its tenth year, is being made bigger and better.
I did not dream that we would have a big new hotel, or that we
would see the day when people are competing hard to build the next
big hotel, even when a new one is already under way at the Plaza
Nacional.
