everyone in the city. How else could that initial bond issue have
been approved in every single voting precinct? How else could that
impossible underwriting campaign have been worked out? How else
could we have persuaded the banks to stick their necks out, on
nothing more than our collective, city-wide pledge of faith?
Unity made it possible, a unity built on that vision and dream,
a dream so clear that one of us could resist it. That dream was our
own new frontier, and our conquest was our own fear and our own in-
hibition.
And one other thing made it possible. Zeal. We, in this community,
worked with the energy of zealots. There was so much to do, in so many
different places, in so many complex situations, that the only way to
get it done was to work with a zeal that nobody every dreamed of.
There we were -- bound in unity by a great and clear vision, work-
ing with purpose and zeal and unity -- and we made the impossible happen,
and not just once but many times. How many hearts had to be won -- here,
and in Austin, and in Washington? How many plans had to be laid? How
many financing operations had to be completed -- and buildings made, and
all, all of them, absolutely critical? Miracles were the usual order of
business.
We had reason to be proud of what was accomplished, for our achieve-
ments were beyond anyone's expectation, and our failures insignificant.
We still have reason to be proud, for the dream has lasted, and the
assets HemisFair left are with us still, forming a base and foundation
