Take you heed of

BY THE YEAR 500
The oftquoted old adage that
Faint heart neer won fair lady
contains a bit of truth that ap-
plies to other things than court-
ship Faint heart never won any-
thing that was worth the wooing
Never become discouraged If
you get a backset get right up
and go at it again This piece of
advice applies to towns as well as
individuals
Today our people are beginning
to ask What is the matter with
Palestine Well theres no
disguising the fact there is sonic
thing the matter with Palestine
It is the same thing that has been
the matter for a long time and
something that iB entirely in the
bands of our people to remedy
or cure
Now lot lisanalyzo a bit and
see what this trouble is
Tn the first place Palestine is
suffering from the effects of last
years short crops as is all of this
entiro section This the town
could Tiave stood with as good
graco as any of the other East
Texas towns if it had not been
for one or two other mitigating
circumstances One of these cir-
cumstances is the removal from
Palestine Of llarge numbers of
trliintnen nriacKinists and me

Anpthor is the fact that the
town all along has been depend-
ing too much on the railroad com-
pany and not sufficiently alive to
her greatest interests In other
word possessing her railroad in-
terests has lulledthc town into a
feeling of security that has proved
hurtful to the towns progress
Palestine can do for herself
what no other intercst can do
she can by an active campnign
broaden her trade territory she
can secure another railroad or
two she can encourage and build
local factories
Let us organize and go after
those things we so much need
Let us not be discouraged
Wonder if Uncle Sam will
get an abstract of title to the
Panama canal before turning over
the money
Andkbbon county farmers can-
not afford to neglect the food
crops With plenty of food stuffs
for man and beast the boll weevil
can be defied
Ok coursePalestine is a mighty
good town but we should not be
satisfied with that Let us make
it the very best town in all this
part of Texas

Indications point to the early
cinstruction of the Kansas City

some big railway system reach-
ing Kansas City from the north
and seeking an outlet over its own
rails to the gulf is behind the
project but it is merely conjecture
in to what system it is behind the

Sadie Martinot Co
Sadie Martinot who during the last
years of the existence of the renown-
ed Boston Museum Stock Company
was the favorite comedienne of that
organization and who has since es-
tablished herself as one of the most
versatile artists who have been con-
nected with the large productions
given at the best theaters in New
York has been prevailed upon by
Manager James Mnrry to undertake a
r Jamsartnot
tonr this season in His Excellency
the Governor a play which ran for
300 performances at the Lyceum and
Empire theatres and In which as
Stella do Gex Miss Martinot scored
a success that enhanced her own re-
putation as well as aided largely in
establishing the popularity of the
comcdyitself
The complete sUije setting that con-
tributed no much to the original pro-
duction is carried by this organization
and the representation of the play in
each city visited ia commented upon
as the most artistic and mirthful spec
imen of high light comedy thattho
season has afforded Miss Martinot
arid her specially selected cast of
players will present His Excellency
the Governor at the Templo opera
house on Saturday night of next week
and the occasion should be taken ad-

To The Herald >
In yesterdays Herald In notlngihe
candidacy of Mr J E Rose for the
State Legislature he is roportodto
have said that if elected he woulduse
his best efforts In behalf of the labor-
ing people
Now withought Intending aword
detrimental to Mr Rose a candidacy
I would like to know what he means
by that very indefinite appellation
laboring people What port of our
citizenship does ho propose to repre-
sent at Austin and to the exclusion of
what part
Who are the laboring people I am
befuddlod I want information Is
it to that honorable calling oftjthe
famer to which he would devotejhls
best efforts The farmers is the most
independent calling under the sun
and becoming more so every dajrIs
ic the mechanic the carpenter the
brick mason the machinist Tqjbe
efficient to be master of any of these
vocations is an exalted poeition Snd
if properly used will place aman
whore he will not deslro any legisla-
tion in his behalf beyond that tbatils
given his neighbor in other lines of
effort and manly occupation Is i in
tho interest of the railroad manhe
would devote his best efforts cThe
railroadman who when he discards
his working card dons his other
clothes and comes from the barber-
shop would lose nothing by compari-
son with one of the big stockholders
of the road and whose wife ind chll
dron will compare favorably in ap
pearance and conduct with the best
inhabitants of the land These rwo dld
certainly scorn the idea of belngthe
objects of special legislation Who is
the laboring man By Ned I amjfat
seal If none of the above cornel un-
der tho head of that exclusive ile
slgnatlon the laboring man maybe
It is the storekeeper and his clerks
who put In fourteen to sixteen hours
a day on their feet bending twilling
turning jumping swearing prevari-
cating in a constant effort to sell goods
enough to keep from going tojthe
wall Perhaps tlieso are they Jp
I wonder if druggists couldjcome
under the head of laboring people
They work eighteen hours a4ay
seven days In tho week and dont
even get a chance on Snnday totaffer
their dovotions to Deity In tlieevent
it should be necessary Or It mayjbo

Now it seems to me that If I had
sense enough to bo a legislator and
it dont take much oithor and en
joyed tho confidence of tho people
sufficiently to become ono my chief
aim would be to guard with jealous
impartial caro the interest of every
class from the lovable social and
civic position occupied by Judgo Rea-
