There bus been considerable in
the press of Texas the past few
issues regarding the claims of
Captain Marsten of Louisiana re-
garding the poisoning of the boll
weevil by the use of Pari green
It is spoken of as a new discovery
and many are lead to hope that a
remedy has at last been found
The statement are misleadingand
Captain Mnrstcn is not presenting
anything new Seven years ago
February 4 1897 Dr L O How-
ard chief Etomologist of the
United States issued a bulletin
stating that boll weevil could be
poisoned by the use of paris green
Loudon purple and other arsen
icatcs if applied when the weevil
was feeding on the tender leaves
and buds of the young plants in
the early spring Again the fol-
lowing year July 1 1898 he de-
voted nearly three pages of a bul-
letin to the poisoning of the boll
weevil So Captain Mnrstcn
plan is not a new one and this in-
formation is given to inform those
who arc trying cultural methods
that the experiment has been tried
and that it is not effective Prof
Curtis who addressed the farm-
ers of this county some weeksago
made the experiment of poisoning
and succeeded and the farmers
who are cooperating with Dr
3JW < Knapn were advised to poison but
wefeturged not to give up the in
tense cultural system Dr Knapp
says that while the weevils that
live through the winter can be
poisoned they cannot be exter-
minated wholly for the reasons
that they do not all come into the
fields at once and that nil farmers
will not poison hence the farmer
who fails to cultivate well and
late and depends upon poisoning
and old system of early laying by
will find too late that the plan is
not a success It is therefore
very necessary that our farmers
keep up a campaign of shallow
plowing and the planting of early
maturing seed and be sure to
keep up the correspondence with
Dr Kuapj Dont fail to fill out
Jill blanks sent you and if you
make any discoveries or want to
ask any special questions do so
They will be promptly answered
Dont depend too much upon
the poiaoning talk Shallow cul-
tivation frequently done is worth
more than anything else and when
the report under this department
ate issued dont fail to get them
and keep a lookout for the best
icsults and how obtained It is
our prediction that the farmer
with early seed commercial fer-
tilizer and late working will show
best results lluntsvillo Post

Feminine Philosophy
A woman can spend more energy In
buying a spool of thread than a man
does in purchasing a house and lot
When I hear of a married woman
seeking to bring rood influences to
bear upon a wicked young man I at
once begin to speculate upon what
lawyer will get the divorce case
When I see a yonng mother wearing
one of those shirt waists that button in
the back I always wonder what kind
of patent infants colic lior husband
walks the floor with at night
It is the inalienable right of every
woman that at some time in her life
some man shall make a fool of himself
over her and in most cases the fool
ithness becomes chronic
The true moral hero is not yet ex-
tinct I have known a young father to-
go boldly into a store and buy a rattle
You never hear of women buying
any gold bricks No but for the rea-
son that gold bricks are never marked
down to 99993
One of tho greatest mysteries in life
is why two women who cordially hate
each other will continuo to exchange
visits and call each other dear
There is no homo so magnificent that
it does not contain one or moro ruga
that the mistress of the house has
bought on tho twentyfive cents a
week plan
Making lovo to a widow is a good
deal like shooting the rapids you
push from the shore and tho current
does the rest P S This is also true
of old maids N B And likewiso of
young girls v
