day where the annual show of the
Horticultural Society of Chicago open

the exhibition this year has been to
exemplify the idea of a city beauti-
ful To this end a number of model
gardens arc shown as examples of
how to make front and back yards
bright with floral beauty
One of the rare sights of the exhi-
bition is a tenyearold orchid which

five years ago It is now blooming for
the first time bearing two flowers of
a richly colored lavender with deep
purple lip The orchid Is called Laella
Cattleya purpurlabiata and is a hy-
brid bought from Sander the famous
orchid specialist of London

datlon of the comimnys properties in
Kansas Colorado Nebraska and Wy
oming This consolidation has been
I effected by the purchase of some
I eighteen or twenty small lines wnich
have heretofore been held under
I lease by the Burlington The princi
pal objects of the consolidation arc to
do away with the necessity of issuing
a multiplicity of annual reports to
simplify the bookkeeping of the sys
tem and to effect economies through
abolition of the separate organization
heretofore maintained by each of the
subsidiary companies
