Reese Barton. 100 oldest cowboy

youth. Barton died with his boots
on last night at the Smith ranch.

the range. A broken collar bone
which failed to heal then ended
hla career In the saddle. Death was
caused by neuralga of the heart.
He had been 111 only n few hours.
Barton told hi friends that he

Barton said that he had never
attended school a day In his life
but learned his letters from cattle
brands. Ho boasted that he knew
the marking of every Texas cattle-
man. Before the civil war he went on
an exploring expedition to the far
west and did not hear of the war
until he returned after It conclu-
sion. Ke began driving cattle from
the southwest to Abilene Kan in
1847 In the next decade he was
one of a group selected to drive
United States calvary horses from
Fort Griffin to old Fort Elliott
where the town of Mobettle now
stand.
Barton hid n family bible which
gave the date of his birth an March
1830 in Charleston S. C. he had
worked on the Smith ranch for 10
years coming to Childress County
before Childress wa founded. He
will be burled here tomorrow.
The cowboy counted among his
early day acquaintances Billy The
Kid and Sheriff Pat Garrett who
killed Billy. Barton knew Wild
Bill Hickok Calamity Jane and
Bat Mastenon and frequently re-
