Associated Cotton Growers
held it’s 40th Annual Member-
ship meeting last Friday, June 21
in Crosbyton at the Pioneer Me-
morial Building and celebrated it
with a banquet meal served by
Danny’s Fins & Hens.
Brooks Ellison, President of
the Board of Directors called the
meeting to order and Clifford
Trull gave the invocation.
A short video of the history
of Associated Cotton Growers
was shown to the capacity
crowd in attendance and was
narrated by, Charlie Wheeler,
Compton Cornelius, and J. K.
Edinburgh, surviving original
members of the Board of Direc-
tors along with Gin Manager
Heethe Burleson. Construction
of the plant which covers 40
acres, began in June 1973. The
first bale of cotton was processed
in late November of that year. A
total of 46,400 bales were pro-
cessed from the 1973 crop. An
additional 3 1/2 million dollars
was earned by the patrons of the
first American Cotton Growers
plant over what would have been
earned using the old method. The
new concept was loading, haul-
ing and ginning performed by
ACG picking the cotton up in the
fields of it’s patrons.
In the beginning it was called
American Cotton Growers and
was the World’s largest cotton
processing plant. The name was
later changed to Associated Cot-
ton Growers.
Although it is common today
to find large cotton gins in West
Texas, ACG Crosbyton has long
been regarded by industry fore-
fathers at the “Super Gin” on the
High Plains of Texas.
Heethe Burleson is pictured above giving the manager's
report at ACG's Annual Meeting held last Friday, June
21st at the Pioneer Memorial building in Crosbyton.
ACG Crosbyton is the only
gin and grain co-op in West Texas
and there are only 11 local agri-
cultural co-ops in Texas with a
cotton gin, grain operation and
farm supply component.
ACG was the Brainchild be-
hind what everyone knows today
as the marketing pool concept
employed by Plains Cotton Coop-
erative Association.
Creation and innovation has
continued in recent years — espe-
cially during periods of shortages
— to where the organization be-
came the second ag co-op in the
state to go the extra mile at retain-
ing and preserving an exceptional
workforce. Working with counter-
parts in Australia, the co-op twice
loaned four of its employees to
cotton gins in that country as a
“win-win” for both parties.
Co-op Director Mickey Giv-
ens, being meticulous with fi-
nances and numbers, was fea-
tured in a state wide study sev-
eral years ago, which showed that
farmers trading with a co-op aver-
aged $69 more margins per bale
when compared to those that
traded through independent gin
operations. Once the study was
released, Mickey participated in
four meeting around the state
showcasing the economic value
of trading though a cooperative.
The gin has moved from a 40-
bale/hour gin in 2007 to a 65-bale/
hour gin today. In the past 7 years
has reduced full-time staff from 23
employees to 7 today. In the most
recent seven-year average of
profit per bale, the co-op made
$36.51 versus $16.01 when com-
pared to the prior seven year av-
erage.
The Associated Cotton
Growers has ginned 1,910,139
bales of cotton in it’s history.
The co-op has handled
6,773,907 bushels ofmilo wand
wheat in the last 14 years.
Associated Cotton Growers
was Chartered in 1981 and has 7
full time employees and 50 to 75
seasonal.
The Association has 668
stockholders and services about
250,000 acres in Crosby, Floyd,
Dickens, Garza, Kent, and Lub-
bock counties.
The Original Board of Direc-
tors were: T. W. Stockton, Jr -
President, Clyde Crausby - vice-
President, Compton Comelius-
Secretary, Board members: J. K.
Edinburgh-McAdoo, D. J.
Moses-Crosbyton, Charlie
Wheeler-Crosbyton, Noble
Hunsucker - Wake, and G. B.
Morris-Past Director.
Today’s Board of Directors:
Brooks Ellison-President, Matt
Wilmeth-vice-President, Mickey
Givens-Secretary, Directors;
Brian Aycock, Steve Harris,
Lance Morris, and Roger Smith.
Heethe Burleson is the General
Manager.
