In order to fulfill the Department Honors Program, students must complete seven
(7) semester hours: 3 hours in Honors Hours, 3 hours in departmental honors
courses, and 1-3 hours Senior Project. If the student joins the Honors Program as
a Junior or Senior, he or she will take six (6) hours Honors Program as designated
by the department as honors courses plus the Senior Project or thesis of 1-3 hours.
For Senior Project see approval stipulation below.
Completion of Honors Program
Any student wishing to graduate with Interdisciplinary Honors or Department Honors
will submit a Senior Project proposal to the Honors Committee in the semester preceding
their registration for the Senior Project course. The Honors Committee will consider the
proposals, taking into account GPA, performance in Honors Hours (if applicable), AIS or
departmental honors work, and faculty recommendations. The number of proposals ap-
proved by the Honors Subcommittee for a given academic year will not exceed 15 per cent
of the projected number of graduates taking baccalaureate degrees in that academic year.
A student must maintain an overall grade point average of 3.25 in order to complete
Departmental or Interdisciplinary Honors.
Students who successfully complete Interdisciplinary Honors or Department Honors
will have that designated on their diplomas.
All students wishing to graduate with Department Honors or Interdisciplinary Honors
will submit an Honors Research Project Proposal to the Honors Subcommittee in the
semester preceding their registration for the Research course or "Senior Project" Course.
The Honors Subcommittee will approve the proposals, considering GPA, performance
in Honors Hours courses, AIS courses, and departmental honors work, as well as faculty
recommendations.
It is presumed that most of these applications will be approved, but in no case will the
number of proposals approved by the Honors Subcommittee for a given academic year
exceed 15 percent of the projected number of graduates taking baccalaureate degrees in
that academic year.
Successful completion of the program will be designated on the students' diplomas.
Students who have the required GPA will also graduate with general honors (Summa
cum laude, etc.) which will also be designated on the diplomas.
DEPARTMENT HONORS PROGRAM
Each department which wishes to offer an Honors Program will design courses which
will fulfill honors in that department. In submitting its courses (or a program individually
designed for a particular student) to the Honors Subcommittee and the Academic Policies
Committee, the department chairperson will show what differentiates honors courses from
other upper-division courses, what criteria the department will use in guiding students
through the Honors Program in that department, and what expectations the department
has for its honors students. McMurry currently offers departmental honors programs in
biology, business, communication, English and Writing, history, mathematics, religion,
and philosophy.
PREMEDICAL AND PREDENTAL PROGRAMS
Premedical and Predental students are required to follow a program leading to a bac-
calaureate degree. While it is possible to enter a professional school without this degree,
this is not now a common practice. Courses which the student must complete prior to
his entrance into medical or dental school are: 1 year of English, 2 years of biology, 1 year
of physics as required for science students, 2 years of chemistry, and 1 year of mathematics
including one-half year of college calculus. These are minimum requirements for the
medical schools in Texas. An average grade of "C" or better must be maintained in each
area. It is often difficult to gain admission to professional schools with this minimum
average.58
