David and Elizabeth Dahl.
awarded the American Farmer Award. David
attended Clifton Junior College for two years,
graduating in 1950.
David had always been involved in farming
with his dad and upon completing his
education, he began to farm full time.
In 1952 David and Elizabeth Ann Hansen
(1933) were married in Trinity Lutheran
Church by the Rev. Walter T. Gigstad.
Elizabeth had moved to Clifton in 1947 from
Minnesota with her parents, Hans and Olga
Hansen and her three brothers, David,
Maynard and Philip. She graduated from
Clifton High School in 1951 and from Clifton
College in 1952.
To this marriage three sons were born,
David Keith (1953), Warren James (1955)
and Christopher Wayne (1959). All three sons
were baptized and confirmed at Trinity
Lutheran and graduated from Clifton High
School.
In 1972, upon graduation, Keith enlisted in
the Navy and at this time holds the rank of
Chief Petty Officer, 1st Class. In 1977, while
stationed in Hawaii, he married. He and his
wife, Mildred or Mitzy, have two daughters,
Angela (1979) and Jennifer (1982). They live
near Hartford, Conn. where he is an instruc-
tor at a Navy nuclear installation.
Warren and Chris chose to follow in their
dad's footsteps and are involved in farming
and ranching around Clifton. Warren also is
employed at Clifton Feed and Service Center.
Just this year, Warren has purchased a farm
in the Norse area not too far from where his
great great grandparents once lived.
In 1965 Elizabeth began her employment
at the Clifton Elementary School as a
Remedial Reading Aide and later became
Elementary School Secretary, a job she holds
at this time.
The family resides on a farm eight miles
east of Clifton, and David farms some of the
land his grandfather Jo Knust purchased
when he first came to Bosque County from
Germany.

eDAHL, EINAR A.
F271
Einar Alfred Dahl arrived in Bosque
County in 1912 with his parents, Ludwig and
Johanne Sveva Dahl, and baby sister, Helga
Marie, from Loiton Township in Norway.
Ludwig Dahl was one of the eleven children
of Hans and Julianne Hansen. This was
Ludwig's third trip to America, and this time
he persuaded his family to come along.
Following his sister's example, he also
changed his last name to Dahl.
Einar was born in Harness, Norway, in
1902. He was baptized there at the age of six
months. Helga Marie was also born there in
1911. Being ten years old when they started
their trilp to America, he remembered the
trip quite vividly: being sea-sick, crowded
conditions, being afraid, and yet impatient to
get to his new home.
They first moved to a farm in Hamilton
County. it was here that Einar started
hunting and fishing as a young boy. He
became an avid fisherman and an expert
riflemen. It was also here that two more
children were born, Louise and Julian. Of
these four children, only one is still living,
Mrs. Oscar Lee Outlaw (Louise) of Clifton.
Helga died in 1943, and Julian died at the age
of 24 while serving in the Army.
Later, they moved to Bosque County,
where Einar continued his schooling and
helped out his mother. His father, Ludwig,
visited in Washington and Oregon with
relatives and deicided to stay. He repeatedly
asked Johanne to join him there, but she
preferred to stay in Bosque County, and so
did the children. Einar especially enjoyed
fishing on the Bosque River, and at the Old
Mill Dam. Ludwig died and was buried in
Tacoma, Washington in 1960, and Johanne
died and was buried in Clifton in 1966.
In 1922, Einar joined the Marine Corp for
three years, and became champion boxer and
pitcher for the Marine Corp baseball team.
He kept up these skills for many yearss. Many
old-timers will remember when Clifton had
a Boxing Ring on Main Street every Saturday
night. Einar never lost a fight; he retired as
champion. The same was true of baseball and
horeshoe throwing.
On May 5, 1926, Einar maried Bessie Mae
Seymour, who was born in Crawford in 1903
to a prominent family by the name of William
Robbinson Seymour, Jr. and Nancy Cranfill
Seymour. Her mother died when she was five
years old, and she was taken into the home
of Carl and Martha Surley, where whe
learned the Norwegion language, and became
a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of
Clifton. She and Einar were in the same
confirmation class in 1917.
After their marriage, they farmed near
Clifton for several years, owned a sheep-
shearing rig, and for 22 years he worked with
the Santa Fe Railroad. He was still working
there at the time of his death.
Einar and Bessie made a good Christian
home for their five children: Norma Jean
(Mrs. Pool A. Miller) of Crawford, Elda Merle
(Mrs. Floyd E. Eggen) of Tyler, Dr. Ralph
Loyd Dahl of Marshal, Kennard Martin Dahl
of Houston, Elvis Burton Dahl of Far-
mington, Minnesota, Patsy Nell (Mrs. L.D.
Luman) of Cooper, and Mary Lois (Mrs. M.R.
Morrison) of the Woodlands. They also hadEinar A. Dahl
so much love to give their grandchildren. The
were blessed with 27 grandchildren, and as of
this date, there are 20 greatgrandchildren.
Einar played the fiddle and Bessie played
the guitar and both were excellent musicians.
They, together with friends, played for many
home dances in the country while we were
small. My fondest memories are of sitting on
the front porch and singing Gospel songs in
harmony.
Einar was very energetic and enthusiastic
about his work, whether for the Santa Fe or
his own garden. They were both active in the
Trinity Lutheran Church in Clifton. Einar
spent many happy hours playing croquet
with life-long friends on the croquet court
behind the church. I never once heard him
turn down anyone who really needed help. He
was the most honest, hard-working and
responsible man I ever knew.
When Einar suffered a cerebral hemor-
rhage and passed away in 1964, it was a great
shock to all of us. Bessie May passed away in
1967 after suffering a heart attack. Both are
buried in Clifton Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.

DAHL, ERWIN R, SR.

Erwin R. Dahl was born in 1943 at Goodall-
Witcher Hospital in Clifton, the first child of
Elfriede and Henriell Dahl, Sr. He has one
brother, Henriell, Jr., twelve years his junior.
The Dahls' family roots run deep in Bosque
County. Erwin's great-great grandfather,
Hendrick Dahl, was one of the first Norwe-
gian settlers west of Clifton in 1854 in the
Gary Creek Valley. This land remains in the
Dahl family to this date.
Erwin grew up on the family farm some five
miles east of Clifton. He received his educa-
tion in the Clifton School System, graduating
in 1962. While in school, he loved sports and
was an active member of the track team.
Another special interest during his school
years was the agriculture program. Erwin
won many awards in his livestock production
at the local and state level. The support of his
parents, and the special interest of his245
