life. One of her favorite hobbies was making
pretty quilts. Some of her handiwork still

Hans and Christine Hanson were hard
working pioneers. They were life-long dev-
oted members of St. Olaf's Lutheran Church
at Cranfills Gap. In the early days they
attended church at Norse and later at the
Rock Church. They were ever ready to give
of their time, efforts, and money to anything
which contributed to the upbuilding of their
community. This included church and school
as well as Clifton Lutheran College. To their
children and grandchildren they left a won-
derful heritage, rich in memories.
by Hazel H. BrownOle Hanson was born 1830 Stange Parish,
Norway. He was the son of Hans Poulsen
(1794-1852) and wife, Marthe Fredriksdatter
(1796-1890).
He was married in Romedal Parish, Nor-
way, to Mathea Hansdatter, born 1839, in
Romedal Parish. She was the daughter of
Hans Hansen (1812-1888) and wife, Eli
Christophersdatter (1816-1849).
They operated Kjostad farm in Loten
Parish, where their first four children were
born: Hans (1862-1956), Eli (1864-1867),
Haagen (1866-1868) and Eli (1868-1868).
Paul Poulson, Ole Hanson's cousin, had
settled in Texas in 1857 and he returned to
Norway in 1867 in order to promote immigra-
tion from Norway to Texas among his former
countrymen. As a result of his efforts, 115
Norwegians from the Hedmark area immi-
grated together on the ship "Atalanta" which
departed Christiania (Oslo) April, 1868 and
arrived at Galveston 50 days later. It was the
first ship to sail from any Norwegian port
directly to Galveston. Included among its
passengers were Ole Hanson and his family;
his brother, Fredrik Hanson; and his cousins,
Bernt Godager, Adolf Godager, Christian
Godager, Even Jensen Gillund, Arne Poulson
and Mrs. Charles Durie nee Pauline Poulsen.
After arriving at Galveston, Ole Hanson
and his family went directly to Bosque
County, where he engaged in farming the
remainder of his life. Ole and Mathea were
lifelong members of the Lutheran Church.
Ole died 1912, and Mathea died 1910. They
are buried in Our Savior's Lutheran Church
Cemetery in the Norse community. Their
children born in Bosque County were:
Martha (1869-1957), Pauline (1871-1970),
Helene (1873-1961), Oline (1875-1909), An-
ton (1877-1879) and Alma (1880-1882).
Hans Hanson married Christine Lee (1864-
1952), who was born Ringsaker Parish,
Norway. She was the daughter of Bore O. Lee
and wife, Lene Mikkelsdatter. Hans and
Christine had seven children: Otto (1892-
1918), Louis (1893-1929), Axel (1895-1963),
Martin (1897-1900), Helga (1899-1955), Ma-
rie (1901-1973) and Martha (1903-1981).

(1863-1944), who was born in Stange Parish,
Norway. He emigrated to Texas in 1883. John
and Martha had eight children: Ole J. (born

1899), Martin (1900-1935), Harold (1903-
