graduated from Texas Tech and was married
to the late John T. Miller Jr., a physician.
They were parents of Evelyn (Ave Bonar) of
Austin; Ann (Mrs. Peter Jorgensen) of Pana-
ma; Tom, who lives in Lubbock; and Paul,
presently of Caracas, Venezuela.
Ellen moved from Lubbock to Clifton in
1979 and was married to W.E. (Dink) Hen-
derson of Clifton, long time Bosque County
resident. She is involved as a volunteer in
charitable activities. In 1984 she was chair-
man of the Bosque County Child Welfare
Board, and was a voting member of the board
of the newly established Mary Lola Brad-
street Brewer Community Foundation.

He sold real estate in Clifton, and was later
employed as a Justice Department land
appraiser, working with government acquisi-
tions for the Whitney Dam. He was land
appraiser for the U.S. Corps of Engineers at
Galveston for several years until his death.

HELMS, CALVERT G. FAMILY
F521brother, Milton C. Helms, was killed in action
in 1944 in France during World War II.
Calvert lived with his family on the Henry
Hafer farm during his childhood. He attend-
ed public schools in Garnersville and gradu-
ated from Meridian High School in 1944. He
was inducted into the U. S. Army after his
eighteenth birthday and served in the Infan-
try and Military Police division in World War
II. He was stationed in the Phillipines until
1946. His parents then moved into their home
at Womack which they purchased from the
A. A. Reichert family.
Mr. Helms was baptized in Immanuel

Ralph Helm (1892-1949) was born in
Clifton, a son of Willis S. and Ellen Helm. He
attended Texas A&M. He and Lena Snell
(1894), daughter of W.H. and Margaret Snell
of Clifton, were married in 1915.
They built a home on the farm north of
Clifton, but moved into town early in their
marriage. Although part of their land was
rented out, Ralph always reserved some of it
to raise cattle.
In 1984 Lena continues involved in many
civic activities. She is the member of longest
standing in the local First Methodist Church,
having attended since her family moved to
Clifton from Coryell County in 1902. She is
president of the Magazine Club, past worthy
matron of the Eastern Star chapter, and a
worker of long standing in the Clifton Civic
Improvement Society. (See W.H. Snell

Dury Helm (1896-1975), a son of Willis S.
and Ellen Helm of Clifton, was an honor
graduate of Texas A&M, commissioned as an
Army first lieutenant in World War I.
A farmer, as well as an oil and gas lease
broker, he worked for conservation of soil and
natural resources. He was interested in
government, and served as Bosque County
Democratic chairman in 1934-38. He was a
Texas delegate to the Democratic national
convention in 1936.
He and his wife, the former Ardella Jones
(1897-1980) of Bryan, were known for their
philanthropies in support of Church of Christ
missions in this country and abroad, and in
support of higher education.

farm at Clifton belonging to his parents,
Willis S. and Ellen Helm. He entered Texas
A&M in 1916, resigning during World War I
to enter the Army Air Corps cadet training
program. He returned to Clifton and farming

was born to Charlie A. and Sarah Elizabeth
(Wilcox) Helms in 1926 at Garnersville. He
was the youngest of three children; his sister
was Mrs. Arnold (Christine) Braune; and hisfirmed in the Zion Evangelical and Reformed
(United Church of Christ) at Womack. It was
in this same church that he married Ora Belle
Hampe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. B.
