E-thoughts: Reading can be more than schoolwork

I've been thinking a lot
about books this week. I
heard a statistie the other
day: The average Ameriean
reads about three books per
year. This astonished me
because 1 find so much per-
sonal comfort in reading.
Truth is I've probably read
three books since January.
I don't think that is par-
ticularly unusual despite
the opinions of some but
further: Why have we
slopped reading? Has lit-
eracy become un-cool? Are
printed pages just so last-
century? Is the new-media
ae of the online genera-
tion unplugging our desire
to open an old-fashioned
ink and paper book?
I grew up in house of read-
ers. M) mother introduced
me to the library very earl)
in my childhood and at this
moment there arc member-
ships to several in my wal-
let. My dad taught English
and some of my earliest
memories include images
of him reading before bed-
lime. Our bookshelves at home
are crammed with volumes
historical fact and fiction
spy novels and biblical
commentaries in addi
tion to the paperbacks I've
added over the years. In
short I guess you could say
reading is a very impor-
tant and natural facet of my
home life.
On the other hand my
two ounger brothers view
the reading experience er
differently. While the) grew
up in the same household as
I their perception is quite
the opposite. They see read-
ing as for school purposes
only something you do out
of necessity more than for
personal gain.
I've often questioned this
difference finding it more
and more common as I learn
of other people's opinions
on the topic. It seems that
the modern education sys-
tem has forced reading into
the category o' undesir-
able activities. Rooks arc
assigned and tested upon

reational reading of silting
dow n on a rainy - or for that
mailer a sunny - day and
opening up a good book.
As we progress through
the college experience we
will read hundreds maybe
thousands of pages of
assigned reading. My hope
for this generation though
is this: That we continue to
open the pages of literature
for a personal purpose. That
we'll change our views on
the "boredom" of reading
and perpetuate the activity
for our children.
