We visited also the Columbus, a three-decker, which
lies at the wharf as a receiving-ship. I felt an involuntary
horror in walking along the decks of this
great ship, and contemplating her fearful batteries
of 32 pounders, prepared for the destruction of human
life. There are a strength, solidity, and adaptation
about a ship of war, that constitute it truly
the triumph of human power; but it is painful to reflect,
that this magnificent display of mind is still
devoted to the service of the most mischievous of
our animal propensities,-Destructiveness.
