FLOODS
Torrential Rains swamped the Fort Worth-Dallas area during
the night causing severe flash flooding in parts of both cities
and striking a death dealing blow to the Cleburne area.
WBAP reporter Larry Sledge spent the night in the Cleburne
area where an estimated 200 families were out of their homes. Four
persons are known dead - others are presumed missing in Cleburne
after an un-official 7 inches of rain fell during the night.
Three of those believed drowned were involved in an ill-fated
rescue attempt south of Cleburne near Rio Vista. A motorist skidded
on a rain slick roadway and his car fell into the rushing water of
Mustang Creek. A Rio Vista minister and a companion attempted a rescue
and were swept away.
Cleburne police reported a man being swept away under a bridge
in the city limits. Cleburne Police and Sheriffs officers have no
confirmed identities on the victimns.
WBAP Newsmen Bruce Neal and Wayne Brown are in Cleburne at this
time - full reports constantly on WBAP Radio 570 -
Rescue workers evacuated 75 to 80 persons from their homes in
the Everman community. a Reception center was established for the
homeless at the Everman Jr. High School Gymnasium.
Red Cross Workers in Cleburne told WBAP NEWS that the floods
there were the worst in their memory. Many families were housed in
the Cleburne courthouse where the Red Cross set up Emergency Shelter
Facilities.
The Texas Department of Public Safety told WBAP News that only
highway &&&% &&&&&&&& 1187- south of Fort Worth remained underwater
this morning.
