Opening Session
4:30 pm March 20, 2009
The Opening Meeting was called to order in the Banita Ballroom at 4:30 pm by President
Harry Fife. He called for the advancement and posting of the colors which was followed by the
pledges to the United States Flag, the Texas Flag and the Sons of the American Revolution by
President Elect Thomas E. Lawrence. The opening prayer was led by Chaplain Dr. Wendell
Edwards. The welcome to the convention for the host chapters was delivered by the Host
Chairman Compatriot Charles Luna. A proclamation from the Roger Van Horn, Mayor of
Nacogdoches, Texas was read by President Harry Fife.
The Head Table was introduced: Judge Edward F. Butler, Sr., Secretary General, NSSAR;
Nathan White, Former President General NSSAR; Dr. Don Pugh, Staff Secretary, TXSSAR; David
Appleby, President General, NSSAR; Robert Grover, Vice President General, South Central
District, NSSAR; Tom E. Lawrence, President Elect, TXSSAR; Robert M. Clark, Jr., Chancellor,
TXSSAR. Other guest introduced were Larry Magerkurth, Inspector General, NSSAR and Barnett
Ellis, President of the NSSAR Foundation.
Chancellor Robert Clark read the order of business of the Convention. President
General David N. Appleby offered his welcome.
The various committees gave their report and they will be published in another format
and be available on the Internet. Only resolutions that require action will be published in these
minutes.
Some awards were presented by the Contest Medals and Awards and after the meeting
was recessed until Saturday morning, March 21, 2009.

Meeting was called from recess and additional awards were presented.
The committee reports continued from the Opening Session. The Reports will be published
separately. President General Appleby addressed the convention to explain the proposed
increase in application fees that will be proposed to the membership at the National Congress
in July. Secretary General Ed Butler addressed the group concerning some changes at the
National Headquarters. Past President General Nathan White addressed the group concerning
