Chaplain Ralph Smith told the board about the service for Will Strong in which he participated. He commented
that it had been a bad year for TXSSAR with the deaths of Will Strong , Blaine Willhoite and a number of other
compatriots, It is a test of our faith to lose a friend or family member. His report is on file. He also gave his

Compatriot Bill Eddleman moved that a resolution be prepared regarding Will Strong's death and copies be sent
to Ann, his wife, and to Josephina, his mother. Motion was seconded and passed. Compatriot Eddleman will write the
resolution.
Texas Compatriot Editor Emmet Parkerson thanked the Board for the appointment and said he had a big pair of
shoes to fill following Rice Aston.
One of the vital jobs of the District Vice Presidents is to physically visit each chapter, so President Bill
asked to hear from each VP about how many chapters they have visited and that they do anticipate visiting all of the
chapters in their districts, letting the board know of any problems.
District 5 VP David Crymes reported the chapters in his district were doing their jobs and getting new members.
He expects an increase in membership in his district.
Comp. Crymes also reported as publicity chairman that the important thing is to get the name of SAP out to the
people. The Big Country Chapter is looking into the possibility of sponsoring a little league ball team.
Crymes also reported a s Oration Contest Chairman that the packets were on there way to the chapter presidents.
He also asked that you identify your chapter by chapter number when you correspond. He said the chapter chairmen will
be informed who the Regional Chairmen are when they are all selected.
District 6 VP John Stepp reported they are working with the Mesquite Chapter of DAR for a parade in Mesquite to
have a joint float. The other chapters are doing well.
District 8 VP Bernard Balser reported that he had been to Conroe in an unofficial capacity but has not heard
from Lufkin or Huntsville.
District 9 VP Norman Jennings reported that he has written to Corpus Christi but has not heard from them. He
is going to try to get them active again.
District 10 VP Jack Haughton reported that they are alive and well. He has attended all of the meetings of
chapters in his district except Tyler and this is just a scheduling problem. He said there are a lot of activities
going on in his district including a joint SAR-DAR meeting on September 17th.
Gene Divine said the Brazos Valley Chapter participated in a July 4th parade with the DAR chapter and their
float won first prize.
Patriots Fund Chairman Hill reported on the financial condition of the fund and also said if anyone had any
projects they wanted funded from the earnings of the fund, to see Delbert Taylor, Chairman of that committee.
Rice Aston presented his giving plan approved by the Patriots Fund Trustees. (See PF Minutes for details.)
Joe Hill moved that copies of the pledge letters be made available to all of our members along with mailing
labels. Motion was seconded and passed.
Secretary-Treasurer Gibson made a report for Centennial Medals Chairman David Peterson who could not be here.
As you remember, the Patriots Fund loaned the committee $2,860 to strike the medals, and will receive any proceeds of
the sales of the medals as a donation. Comp. Peterson reports that so-far, he has sold $2,732 of medals, so is almost
at break-even. The sales are still doing well. Pres Floyd requested that Comp. Peterson have the medals available for
sale at the New Braunfels board meeting.
President Floyd announced that he has appointed Charles Motz as the new chairman of the Eagle Scout Committee.
The deadline for the Eagle Scout competition will be published in the next issue of The Texas Compatriot.
Del Fowler reported that the National Society voted an increase in the new member dues beginning November 1
from $60 to $77. Compatriot Fowler moved amendments to the state bylaws amending Article XVI, Fees and Dues, to delete
all of section 13, which would change the corresponding state provisions for the same dues. Motion was seconded. After
discussion, Bill Eddleman moved to table the motion. Motion to table was passed by a 2/3 majority vote of the board
members.
Compatriot Fowler reported on the Perpetual Membership Fund, summarizing where and how much of the monies are
invested. He talked to our representative at Shearson Lehman who expressed agreement that we should sell the Kemper
Fund investment. Its earnings for the last four months has been 6.22%. He recommends Kemper be sold and the money
invested in Treasury Notes at about 6.9% After discussion, motion was made & seconded to do the above. Motion carried.
President Bill announced that the National Society has authorized an Operating Guide for military base
genealogical training. A document for this training was put together by compatriots in Arizona and is very good. It
takes six weeks to complete the training. President Bill has asked Reed Dillon and Joe Ware in San Antonio to arrange
for doing the course at Ft. Sam Houston sometime this year.
