Air controllers across the country--the people
responsible for directing aircraft in and out of all
airports--have been threatening a mass resignation in
a dispute with the Federal Aviation Agency.
Such a walkout, of course, would create an air
traffic crisis in the nation. Apparently, it can only
be averted by the FAA's agreeing to the air controllers
demands.
They've been calling for higher salaries, better
equipment and more k*W trained controllers. The FAA
recently responded by ordering a stop to dues check-offs
for the group.
For the past two days, members of the Southwest
Region of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organi.
zation have been meeting in Dallas and Houston. The
