There are some foot-sore but proud Boy and Girl
thete
Scouts today, following successfull completion
yesterday of the annual Longhorn Council's 50 mile
hike.
This year's 50 mile stroll was laid out over the
terrain north of Fort Worth. The annual 50 miler
maintains a tradition begun in the 1960s, when
medical experts praised the beneficial results of
long hikes. Youthful members of the Kennedy
administration began the fad, taking 50 mile walks
up and down the potomac in Washington. In the
Longhorn Council, any scout, boy or girl can make the
trek, and there were a significant number of girl
scouts who turned out for the event. The goal was
to make the 50 miles unaided, and thereby establish
self confidence and earn a hiking merit badge.
