During this four year period, we experienced only one
other road block. This occurred in Houston, Texas.
We were told we could eat together, but we could not
stay together. So we turned to the railroad and found
we could take Pullman carsiand go across the street to
a cafeteria for meals. Basically, these were the only
problems we were confronted with during this four
year period. During this period our team went 7-2(in
'56, 5-5 in '57, 7-2-1 in '58, and 9-1 in '59.
In 1959 we were the champions of the M.V.C. and
were selected to play New Mexico State in the Sun
Bowl in El Paso.
It was a wonderful 5 days of luncheons and attending
the different functions that were arranged for both
teams. At the end of the 1959 season, we were the
Missouri Valley Conference champions with a record
of 9-1.
We led the nation in total offense, scoring 295 points
to our opponents 75. After the eighth week of the
season, we were one of four teams who were still
undefeated and ranked #9 in the nation.
We had two all-Americans in Abner Haynes and Bill
Carrico. In addition, we had 9 all Missouri Valley
Conference players. They were Bill Carrico, Abner
Haynes, George Herring, Bill Groce, Hal Byrd,
Vernon Cole, Frank Klein, Bob Way, & Sammy
Stanger.
