ROD RUST
A 7-3 record is a creditable performance for any
coach, but that 1969 result actually dropped Rod Rust's
winning percentage. Few will shed tears, however, over
his three-year batting average of .776.
Rodney A. Rust, who assumed additional duties as
director of athletics last Feb. 1, has put together records
of 7-1-1, 8-2-0 and 7-3-0 in his brief
career as a collegiate head football
coach. His record in Missouri Valley
Conference games is 12 wins, 2 losses.
When the departments of physical
education and athletics were split
last winter, Rust found himself caught
up in a busy schedule. In addition to
his management of department af-
fairs, he is president of the MVC
athletic directors, chairman of the
MVC television committee and a mem-
ber of the MVC constitutional revi-
sion committee. He also served last year as district repre-
sentative for the American Football Coaches Association.
Rod participated in football, basketball, track and the
band at Franklin High in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He played
football for his father, Orville Rust, longtime coach and
athletic director and a member of the Iowa Hall of Fame.
Rust lettered three years, 1947-49, at Iowa State as a
center and linebacker. A junior college coaching job in
Webster City, Iowa, after graduation lasted four months
before the Army intervened.
He served two years as an enlisted man and was an
All-Far East football selection during a tour of duty in
Japan. Rust was the head football coach at these Iowa
high schools following the Army: Toledo, Belle Plaine,
Knoxville and Ottumwa.
The 42-year-old Rust was an assistant at the Univer-
sity of New Mexico three years, 1960-62, and at Stanford
University four years, 1963-66. He become NT's eighth
head coach on Jan. 1, 1967.
By opponents, here is his three-year record of 22
wins, six losses and one tie-Opponent
