★SODOMY
Continued From Page 39
Foundation in Dallas pointed to
lack of representative data in
research as a major difficulty
in any study of homo-sexuality.
In the area- of psychological de- ^
velopment, Dr. Lewis said homo- j
sexuality is but one outcome of -jj
the identity process.
“There are various stages of
development in the maturing
process of a child and all kinds
of events can disrupt any one of
these stages,” he said, quickly
adding one isolated incidence of
molestation would not irreversi-
bly determine a person’s becom-
ing a homosexual.
THE PSYCHIATRIST s a i d
there is no evidence to support
the claim that all homosexuals
are psychologically disturbed.
He did state cultural influences
have an impact on people and
“adolescence may ultimately be
the cruicial time at which
trends are crystalized and con-
firmed.”
The psychiatrist concluded
there is much to suggest at the
present time that sexual activity
between consenting adults in pri-
vate is not a legal matter.
Several admitted homosexuals,
both as resource persons and as
panelists, participated in the con-
ference.
One homosexual drew an anal-
ogy between the homosexual and
the Negro, saying “both are re-
pressed minority groups regard-
ed as very low members of so-
ciety.”
“GENERIC TO any law are
the social consequences of that
law, and it is unfortunate we
may have new laws proposed
which will tend to propogate a
double standard,” commented
another.
He added laws have a strong
impact on shaping the public’s
attitudes, and such laws are ask-
ing the homosexual to meet cer-
tain moral standards the hetero-
sexual is not asked to meet.
The issue of discrimination
against homosexuals, if it comes
to court, will be a federal matter
on the grounds of constitution-
ality, and it may be the final test
will be in the hands of the Su-
preme Court, one panelist con-
cluded.
