Sanctuary city' issue needs voice of moderationC ht aash coruiu w5
Established October 1, 1885LETTERS
G ov. Rick Perry has helped ratchet up
emotions over illegal immigration by
condemning "sanctuary cities" and
placing the issue on the emergency legislative
agenda. There's no emergency here, but for all
the bluster this issue likely will generate, Tex-
as risks gaining the same pariah status as Ari-
zona if radical voices hold sway.
Perry understands this issue's divisiveness
and should do what he can to ensure that law-
makers don't go overboard in their zeal for a
hard-line crackdown.
He has warned against going the way ofAr-
izona, which last year gave police broad new
powers to detain suspected illegal immigrants
and made it a crime not to carry immigration
documents at all times. .
Still, the problem is worthy of the Legisla-
ture's attention, because many Texans are

them the power to process arrested suspects'

illegal immigrants with criminal records. The
goal is to have all U.S. cities participating, as

Broad effort needed to boost economy, he

President Barack Obama gave a State of
the Union speech full of hope, promise, in-
novation, jobs, technology, education, stron-
ger economy, co-mingling of parties and a
better future for all. He believes we can and
must move forward. I believe we can.
It certainly was a different tone in the
House chamber tonight. A hopeful tone.
