the Layton School of Art stands as a symbol
of the interest in art that is surging in the great
U. S. Midwest.
It also reflects the influence of LIFE on the
ZADOK EXAMINES SCALE MODEL OF SCHOOL
871,047 people who enjoy Milwaukee's pros-
perity. And this is why ...
When Charles Zadok, vice-president of Gimbel
Brothers, was chairmaning a fund-raising drive
for building the school, LIFE published an article
about him called "Wisconsin's Cultural Dynamo."STUDENT'S CANVAS IS APPRAISED BY ZADOK
Then, in Mr. Zadok's words: "Everywhere I was
greeted with 'Weren't you in LIFE?' LIFE not
only opened doors, but pocketbooks for me." Last
year the art school building was erected. But
LIFE's impact on, and Zadok's interest in, art in
the Midwest continued.
Zadok commissioned artists, including Lowell
Lee, to paint "Wisconsin Airscapes." Seven of
these LIFE reproduced in color. Reported Lee:
"After my work appeared in LIFE, I received more
commissions in the ensuing three weeks than inthe previous year."
LIFE's influence on the culture of Milwaukee
and America is assessed by Merchant Zadok: "The
impact of LIFE's art stories is such that art may one
day become one of the most important common

denominators in this country."
