This is a philosophical and historical treatment of the develop-
ment of cooperatives as a whole, and the development and present
status of the movement in Denton County. The searching of records,
interviews, and information of various types gleaned from many
sources show how this development has been made and the results
obtained. Institutions studied include The Denton County Teachers
Federal Credit Union, The Denton County Electric Cooperative, Inc.,
Cooperative Boarding Houses at Texas State College for Women, and
several rural and small community cooperative associations.

This thesis seeks to answer three questions: (1) By what stand-
ards may application letters for teaching positions be judged?
(2) How well does the average teacher meet these standards in his
own application letters? (3) What changes should teachers make
in their application letters to make them stronger? Data were ob-
tained from three sources: (1) documentary sources; (2) a question-
naire sent to one hundred college and university presidents; (3)
sixty-five application letters from the files in the office of the Presi-
dent of North Texas State Teachers College. One chapter each is
devoted to the qualities of a good business letter, the characteristics
of effective application letters, the characteristics of a good teacher's
application letter, and analysis of the sixty-five application letters,
and conclusions and recommendations for the improvement of teach-
ers' applications.
