LANGSTON, CHARLES L., The Significance of the School Board
in a Public School Relations Program. Master of Arts (Public School
Administration), August, 1936, 57 p., 3 tables, 9 illustrations, bibli-
ography, 5 titles.
This study shows the responsibility of the school board in keep-
ing the people informed about the school. A discussion of the activi-
ties of a school board of seven members in a small Texas town is
given, supported by figures, showing in part the socio-economic com-
munity groups to which the board members belong. This was done to
determine the possibilities of the board members acting as agents
of informal interpretation in a public school public relations program.
The study contains recommendations for further study.
LARSEN, Ross HAROLD, An Evaluation of the Equality of Ed-
ucational Opportunity. Master of Science (Public School Adminis-
tration), August, 1939, 87 p., 28 tables, bibliography, 17 titles.
The author made a study of the educational opportunities in
health, physical education, and recreation for boys in junior high
schools of a city having three different socio-economic areas. The
data were obtained from questionnaires answered by 360 boys in
three junior high schools and from the principals of these junior high
schools.
The body of the thesis is an analysis of the facilities in health,
physical education, and recreation in the homes, schools, and com-
munities of each area. A formula was used to determine the inequality.
It was found that one district was inferior to the other two.
That is, that where the socio-economic conditions were the poorest,
there existed the fewest health, physical education, and recreational
facilities.
The writer recommended that the present program in health,
physical education, and recreation be arranged by the schools pro-
portionally, so that every boy in each district might have equal op-
portunity in the home, school, and community.
