BAKER
FRANK LIVE: A Fort Worth man who died last night in Tucumcari,
New Mexico of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot
wound has been identified as 29 year old William H.
Baker. Tucumcari police said Baker shot himself
following a brief chase by officers who had stopped
his car for a routine license check. Officers said
they found a pistol in Baker's hand and a note to his
wife in the car.
SF: BAKER Last August, Baker made headlines in Fort Worth when,
as manager of Corrigan's Jewelers in Seminary South,
he took 35 thousand dollars worth of jewels from the
store after telling employees that two men were
holding his wife for ransom. His wife turned up at
home shortly afterward, but Baken then disappeared.
FRANK LIVE: Some 30 hours later, Baker called home saying he had
escaped from his captors and had recovered the jewels.
On August 1!h, however, Fort Worth police, convinced
that Baker's story was a fabrication, charged him
with making a false report to police and theft overfif by dollars.
