CHIPThe strike by ildependant truckers upset over thie lower
speed limit and the rising cost of fuel continued today
across Texas...and there are now indications that the protest
will be 4 felt seriously in several segements of the
economy.
As the strike gains momentum throughout the southwest,
spokesmen from the cattle industry say they fear a
nationwide beef shortage by this week-end. However, the
Dallas-Ft Worth area would be the last to be affected, because
of our proximity to suppliers.
However, feed lot suppliers and meat packers report they
cannot find contract carriers to haul livestock or processed
beefA...and a spokesman for the Armour Company says the
cutback means a loss 'of 3-million pounds of beef daily on theopen market.
He sees an acute shortage at supermarkets as
early as Friday.
