Programs of Study
The Department of Computer Sciences
offers a complete curriculum oriented to
the technology of computers. Programs in-
clude the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of
Science, the Master of Arts, the Master of
Science and the Doctor of Philosophy
degrees, and teacher certification in com-
puter science.
The curriculum includes introductory
courses and courses in assembly languages,
higher-level languages, system design, sys-
tem programming, digital logic, artificial
intelligence pattern recognition and hard-
ware design. System modeling and some
numerical application courses are offered
by the department; application courses also
are offered by other departments.
Undergraduate Degrees
The BA and BS degrees offered at UNT
are unusual in the computer science field
because they require a quality arts and
sciences basis for higher education rather
than a curriculum composed mostly of
business, mathematics or engineering sub-
jects. Both degrees require a minimum
grade point average in the advanced com-
puter science courses.
The Bachelor of Arts degree with a
major in computer science is designed to
provide a broad education so that the stu-
dent can acquire a variety of professional
opportunities.
The Bachelor of Science degree with asional degree designed for a career of fur-
ther studies in the technology and applica-
tion of computers. The BS degree requires
more course work in computer science and
mathematics, and more advanced work in
technical writing or foreign language and
physics than does the BA degree. An
18-hour minor should be chosen so as to
provide an in-depth understanding of an
area to which the techniques of the com-
puter field may be applied.
The Bachelor of Science program has
been accredited by the Computer Sciences
Accreditation Board, Inc.
A minor in computer science usually
includes CSCI 1110, 1120, 2010, 3100,
plus 6 additional hours, 3 of which must
be advanced. (The 6 advanced hours for
a computer science minor must be taken
at UNT.)
The following outlines the degree re-
quirements for the BA and BS degrees
with majors in computer science.
Bachelor of Arts
1. Total credit of 128 semester hours,
42 of which must be advanced.
2. Major area (computer science): 33
hours, including CSCI 1110, 1120, 2010,
3100, 3400, 3600 and 3870. At least 21
hours must be in advanced courses, 12 of
which must be taken at UNT. A max-
imum of 6 hours of credit in courses
numbered CSCI 4880, 4890, 4900 or 4910
will count toward this degree. A minimum
GPA of 2.75 is required for all advanced
hours attempted in the major.
3. Minor requirements: 18 hours in one
department other than the computer sci-
ences department (major) including at
least 6 advanced hours. A multi-depart-
mental minor may be obtained but must
be approved in advance by the computer
sciences department.
4. University requirements: consult the
College of Arts and Sciences section of
this catalog for general requirements for
the bachelor's degree, and for arts and
sciences core-course requirements for the
Bachelor of Arts degree.
Bachelor of Science
1. Minimum of 134 semester hours, 42
of which must be advanced.
2. Major area (computer science): 45
hours, including CSCI 1110, 1120, 2010,
3100, 3400, 3600, 3870 and 4450. At least
30 hours must be in advanced courses, in-major in computer science is a profes-
taken at UNT. A maximum of 6 hours of
credit in courses numbered CSCI 4880,
4890, 4900 or 4910 will count toward this
degree. A minimum GPA of 2.75 is re-
quired for all advanced hours attempted in
the major area.
3. Minor requirements: 18 hours in one
department other than the major depart-
ment including at least 6 advanced hours.
A multi-departmental minor may be ob-
tained but must be approved in advance
by the computer sciences department. The
courses comprising a minor may include
those that satisfy the following area
requirements.
4. Communications area: 21 semes-
ter hours.
a. 15 hours of the following: ENGL
1310 and 2700, COMM 2010 plus 6
hours of literature (see arts and sci-
ences core curriculum for literature
course selection);
b. 6 hours selected from ENGL 4180,
4190, 4250, or 6 hours in advanced
foreign language (3060 and 3070 or
equivalent in one foreign language).
5. Science area: 16 semester hours.
a. 8 hours of physics from the follow-
ing: PHYS 1710-1730, plus PHYS
1720-1740 or 2220-2240;
b. 8 hours of biology or geography (see
arts and sciences core curriculum for
biology or geography course selection).
6. Mathematics area: 15-16 semester hours
to include the following mathematics
courses or their equivalent: MATH 1710,
1720, 1780 (or 4610), 2770, plus 3 hours
selected from 2700, 3300, 3410 or 4350.
7. Humanities, Social Science, Non-
Western Societies area: 9 semester hours.
a. Three hours of philosophy (see arts
and sciences core curriculum for
philosophy course selection).
b. Three hours selected from ECON
1100 or 1110.
c. Three hours of Non-Western
Societies (see arts and sciences core
curriculum for Non-Western Societies
course selection).
