DISCIPLES NOMINEE AFFIRMS LESBIANS AND GAY MEN
The General Board of the Christian Church (Disicples of
Christ) meeting in Chicago on July 29 nominated the Reverend Dr.
Michael K. Kinnamon to serve as the next General Minister and
President of the denomination. The nomination which was approved
by a vote of 122 to 35 will be submitted to the nearly 8,000
delegates attending the denomination's General Assembly in Tulsa
from October 25-30.
The nomination of Dr. Kinnamon, currently Dean of the
Lexington Theological Seminary in Lexington, Kentucky, has
generated much controversy because of his unequivocal support,
based on biblical interpretation, for the full participation of
gays and lesbians in the church. During an address to the Board,
Dr. Kinnamon said, in reference to lesbians and gay men, "And in
Christ, they have heard a word of genuine good news: You are
loved! You are part of this community not by virtue of your
passport or the color of your skin or the level of your income or
the number of your degrees or your sexual orientation--but only
by virtue of the grace which enables us to confess that Jesus is
the Christ, the Son of the living God."
Concerning the many letters he had received about the
membership which he and his wife hold in the Gay, Lesbian and
Affirming Disciples Alliance, Dr. Kinnamon said, "Almost no
correspondents seem interested in why we would choose publicly to
affirm brothers and sisters in Christ who are gay and lesbian.
They hear of this commitment and pronounce it right or wrong,
biblical or unbiblical, thus undercutting any chance of learning
from one another in the community of faith."
The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) headquartered in
Indianapolis has over one million members in over 4,000
congregations. The Gay, Lesbian and Affirming Disciples Alliance
is an organization of laity and clergy within the denomina-
tion which seeks to maintain a visible presence at all levels
of the church structure. For more information about the
