DALLAS GAY ALLIANCE
February 10, 1988
Dear Members and Friends,
The Dallas Gay Alliance finished its semi-annual retreat with a very ambitious agenda for
the next six months. I want to share with you some of the details we covered during the
two-day session and let you know where we stand to-date with DGA affairs.
The last six months have been very rewarding. We received a $48,000 grant from the
Meadows Foundation to renovate the food and clothing banks of the AIDS Resource
Center; GUTS (Gay Urban Truth Squad) was formed and hit at D/FW Airport and the City
Hall Plaza; and we expanded the financial commitment of the AIDS Financial Assistance
Fund.
Some highlights of various ongoing projects include:
* Billboards advertising 559-AIDS have been posted throughout Dallas.
* We opened the Aerosol Pentamidine Breathing Room.
* We supported the PWA House financially.
* We agreed to coordinate the March on Austin in 1989.
* We have installed a computer link for AIDS treatments.
* We will hire a staff attorney to file discrimination lawsuits.
* We have added a part-time administrative assistant at the AIDS Resource Center.
* We have added a part-time administrative assistant for the Dallas Gay Alliance.
* We have restructured the Dallas Gay Political Caucus to make it more responsive to
voter education.
* We will print a Spanish-language newspaper for Los Barrios Unidos.
* We are consolidating our AIDS educational efforts with special emphasis on out-
reach to the gay community.
* Renovation is underway on the food and clothing banks.
* The DGA will coordinate the Quilt activities for its visit to Dallas on May 3.
Now for some more details on a few of the projects above:
Parkland Hospital and Pentamidine Mist
The Dallas Gay Alliance met recently with Parkland Hospital administrator Ron Anderson
and others in an attempt to convince Parkland of the immediate need to include the aerosol
pentamidine therapy for persons who are HIV positive. The studies conducted by the FDA
and the drug manufacturer have already shown such dramatic results that the drug has be-
come widely available -- except at Parkland
The Dallas Gay Alliance offered to buy the mist machines for Parkland's program and we
were told that it wasn't necessary to get the project underway.
We also talked with Parkland regarding getting rid ofits AZT waiting list of 40 patients.
Earlier last year we were told that Parkland could not supply AZT because of inadequate
funding. As you may know, the Texas Human Rights Foundation threatened a lawsuit
against the Texas Department of Human Resources, and suddenly, AZT funding was avail-
able. But at Parkland, they said that now the problem was one of inadequate staffing, a
problem that has been around for over a'year.Dallas Gay Alliance P.O. Box 190712 Dallas, Texas 75219
