"We only have this life," she said.
"The challenge is that you do the best
that you can in that moment because
you'll never get it again."
Mayor Ron Kirk stopped by the pre-
ceremony reception to congratulate
THRF. Praising the judge, he joked that
when he talks to conservatives, his
sense of balance is intact "as long as
someone is cussin' Jerry Buchmeyer."
Other THRF awards went to:
the Human Services Network and
Immunocise as "Outstanding Emerging
Organizations" for their work helpingpeople with AIDS,
Cathedral of Hope, MCC as an
"Outstanding Community Institution,"

He replaces long-time executive director John ThomasBy Dennis Vercher
The leader of a Baton Rouge AIDS
agency has been hired as executive
director of the Foundation for Human
Understanding, which operates the
AIDS Resource Center, Gay and
Lesbian Community Center and
Nelson-Tebedo Community Clinic.
Charles Domingues, executive direc-
tor of Friends for Life: Capital Area
HIV/AIDS Services, Inc. of Baton
Rouge will assume the Foundation post
on April 1, announced the Foundation's
president, Steve Hawkins.
"We especially liked his manage-
ment expertise and his performance in
accomplishing additional funding at
the agency in Baton Rouge," Hawkins
remarked. "In addition, we were
impressed by his overall demeanor and
presence. He is a very affable and warm
person, and we feel like he'll fit in well
here."
More than 60 people applied for the
post, which became vacant when long-
time executive director John Thomas
retired at the end of January, citing
health problems. Thomas is infected
with the AIDS virus.
From the range of applicants, a foun-dation search committee selected eight
individuals to participate in a final
round of interviews in Dallas.
"All the finalists were very well
qualified," Hawkins said. "Charles, we
feel, had overall qualifications in the
sort of areas we were looking for. He
just filled all the various bills very
well."
Although a search committee made
recommendations, the full foundation
board made the final decision, Hawkins
added.
Domingues, who holds a bachelor's
degree in social welfare from the
University of Southwestern Louisiana
and a masters in social work from the
University of Georgia, served as execu-
tive director of Friends for Life since
September 1994.
Previously, he worked in Houston
for Methodist Hospital and two health
care concerns.
Domingues has served on various
healthcare-related committees and
boards, including those sponsored by
the Texas Department of Human
Services, AIDS Foundation of Houston,
HIV Service Providers of Houston and
the East Baton Rouge Parish School
Board. VFriends Ministry announces opening of general store
The HIV/AIDS Ministry at White
Rock Community Church has opened a
General Store where people living with
HIV disease may shop for free dry
goods and household products, offi-
cials announced this week.
The store is located at the White
Rock Community Church complex at
722 Tenison Memorial Road in East
Dallas. Store hours are noon until 2
p.m. on Tuesdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
on Saturdays and Sundays.
Jerry Lynn, an official affiliated with
the program, said the new store is
designed to compliment the offerings
of the Food Pantry operated by the
AIDS Resource Center. Although the
General Store at White Rock will not
supply food or perishables, it will be
able to offer household products, such
as toiletries, kitchen supplies, cleaningsupplies and other products to area
people living with AIDS.
"The need is just too great. We want-
ed to do something to help," Lynn
remarked.
First-time shoppers should be pre-
pared to provide a photo I.D. and a let-
ter of diagnosis for documentation,
Lynn said.
Any area person with AIDS is eligi-
ble to shop at the store up to twice a
month.
The Tuesday store hours follow the
ministry's PWA luncheon.
The church complex is located across
the street from a DART stop, Lynn
pointed out.
For more information about the
General Store and its offerings, individ-
uals may call 320-0043.
