"Opening the Closet Door: Perspec-
tives on Homosexuality" is a symposi-
um to promote understanding be-
tween homosexuals and heterosexuals,
said Geoffrey Wurzel, Texas Union
Human Issues Committee chairman.
"It's the first time this type of pro-
gram has been done by a heterosexual
group - and objectively," Wurzel said
Friday.
"It' is something we chose to do, not
something we were approached and
asked to do," Wurzel said. "I don't
know if it's growing or because people
are more open, but it's an issue we'll
have to face. Our main target audience
is heterosexuals."
"The Legal Aspects of Homosexuali-
ty" will be discussed at 7 p.m. Tuesday
in the Academic Center Auditorium.
Speakers will include Don Baker, for-
mer president of the Dallas Gay Alli-
ance; Robert Schwab, president of the
Texas Human Rights Foundation; and
I inn C'ra ilia a R P C ( Raker and Fdna
IHeflin professor of constitutional law.
"Homosexuality: Nature vs. Nur-
ture? A Question of Origin" is what
Wurzel calls a "heterosexual issue."
The panel discussion will begin at 3
p.m. Wednesday in the Texas Union
Sinclair Suite.
Because "people who are tolerant of
homosexuals draw the line at relig-
ion," Wurzel said, another panel will
discuss "Is There Room for Homosex-
uality in Religion?" Participants in the
discussion, scheduled for 4 p. m.
Wednesday in the Texas Union Qua-
drangle Room, include: Troy Stokes,
board member of United Methodist
Church; Gray Rober, director of the
Austin chapter of the Gay Atheists
League of America; Gary Vodicka, UT
business/history senior; and Joan
Wakeford, a minister at Metropolitan
Community Church.
Members of the Gay Students Asso-
ciation, Gay Students Services of Texas
A&M, Law Students for Human Rights
and the Austin Chapter of Gay Athe-
ists Lea gue of America will discuss"Gays on Campus" at 3 p.m. Thursday
in the Texas Union Sinclair Suite. They
will contrast organizations and re-
sources available on different cam-
puses and examine effects of campus
events on gays in non-academic life.
The changing portrayal of homosex-
ual characters will be addressed in
"Gays and Lesbians in the Media: Pro-
gression in the Last Ten Years" at 4:30
p.m. Thursday in the Texas Union
Sinclair Suite.
"Sometime an understanding has to
happen. It's time we stopped denying
its existence, but that doesn't mean
you have to condone it or accept it,"
Wurzel said.
Jane Stendebach, Human Issues
Committee adviser, said, "It (the sym-
posium) is not promoting homosexual-
ity; it's promoting an understanding of
homosexuality.
"It's definitely an educational pro-
gram," she said. "It's not supposed to
be sensationalistic."- mp PR , -1- O ro
