Flanked by Deputies Don Cowden and C.E. Webb, bible-quoting
ex-mental patient Mickey Covington is taken from a mental
ward in Ft. Worth to a sanity hearing. Covington has 0
admitted he killed Ft. Worth Druggis Homer Morrison in
November 1959, and I administered a savage beating to Mrs.
Morrison during an attempted robbery.
The jury will be asked to decide the state of
mind at the present time, and at the time of the killing.
Covington placed his wrist on a railroad track and lost his
hand, saying he did it because of the Biblical passage, "If
Thy Right Eand Offend Thee, Cut it Off."
His attorney, Jack Mackin, quotes a doctor's statement that
Covington is insane now. Mackin and co-counsel Jim Ferguson
do not contest the state's claim that Covington was sane at
the time of the crime.
As the dead man's two--sisters and two brothers watch the
