Fife to edge the host In-
dians, 59-56, in a key
District 14-4A contest
Tuesday night, and re-
tain at least some hopes
for the league crown
With the victory, the
Ricebirds moved to 6-1 in
district action, remain-
ing tied with Wharton for
the top spot. The pivotal
game could come Tues-
day, when the Tigers
travel to Santa Fe,
needing a win to go into
bi-district play outright.
El Campo, conversely,
needs an Indian triumph
in order to have any shot
at the second - half title.
Ironically, as awesome
as Fife was Tuesday, it
was the 6-4 strongman
who may have been the
goat. El Campo led 58-56
with a minute left, on the
strength of two free shots
by Darnell Cash, who
finished with a team -
high 24 points. Fife miss-
ed on the other end
seconds later, but El
Campo’s stall was
stymied when Paul Foley
charged David Galkow-
ski with 38 seconds left,
giving Santa Fe another
shot.
The Indians worked the
ball in low to Fife as time
was running out, hoping
for at least a tying
basket, or maybe even a
three - point play to win.
But the big Indian post,
who already had scored
27 points to keep the hosts
in it, charged into El
Campo’s Charles
Williams, giving the
Ricebirds possession
again with three seconds
left.
Fife protested the call,
and was handed a
technical foul, which

verted into his 17th point,
on a free throw. The
visitors then took the ball
out of bounds and ran out
the clock, preserving the
crucial win.
The teams played it
closely all the way, tying
10-10 after one period,
and 26-26 through the
first halt. Santa Fes
Domingo Morales hit two
of his 11 points as the
third quarter ended, put-
ting the Indians up 43-41,
but Cash hit 11 of his
points in the last eight
minutes, finally putting
the Ricebirds ahead at
56-54. with 1:52 left
Charles Williams had six
points, all in the second
half, with Chris Howard
getting three of his four in
the last quarter, and Jeff
Knebel also finishing
with four.
El Campo’s junior var-
sity built a six - point lead
through three periods
and held onto it in a 55-49
victory in earlier play.
Booker Runnels hit 11
points and Harold
Goodall 10.
The Ricebird freshmen
had one of their biggest
offensive games of the
year, but it still wasn’t
enough, as Santa Fe took
a 54-45 win in another
preliminary contest.
Todd Jaksch hit 19 points
and Dewarren Bellard 17.
‘Kieth Plan ’ Gets
Schools ’ Approval
A change in the state
playoff structure for high
school varsity football,
basketball, volleyball
and baseball, proposed
by El Campo athletic
director Buzzy Kieth, has
been adopted by the
state’s superintendents,
effective for the 1982-83
school year.
The change will allow
each University In-
terscholastic League
athletic district to send
its top two teams in each
of those sports into the
playoffs, rather than only
the champion. Over the
past two years, the idea
has become known as the
“Kieth Plan,’’ for its
originator, and apparent-
ly, has met with
favorable response in
most circles. The state’s
superintendents approv-
ed it for each of the four
sports by a comfortable
margin.
“Naturally, I was real-
ly happy with the way the
voting went,” Kieth said
after learning of the deci-
sion. “From the feedback
I’d gotten on it from
various people, I had felt
it had a good chance to
pass, but you never real-

ly know until the final
vote comes. I believe it
will get more kids involv-
ed and will boost interest,
and that’s what we’re all
trying to accomplish,” he
explained.
Wednesday’s Leader -
News will examine the
consequences of the
playoff plan, as it affects
each of the four sports.
